Satnrday evening, 22d instant we had tho pleasure of hearing quite an interesting lecture delivered by T. 13. Demaree, of Kentucky. Though an old subject, he, as all men that are well posted, set forth new ideas. In all parts of the country you find people that will find objectionable features in a lecture on this subject, we must say that we did not hear any one admit that he was unreasonable in hi* argu ments. He went as tar back with the subject as history gives any account of wines, then iroin wine to strong drink, he said some would say that Christ was among the first that made wine, admitted, he turned water into wine and we have no account of it in- toxicating any one; it was not |>er mented wine, not being more than at most an hour old. Then the devl had something to accomplish to win sonls tor his kiiiydi m, he maneuvered and sought many inventions and he em ployed agents to try all vegitation and see it they could extract the poisonous propot ions and manufacture it into something railed drinks end medicines good for the health Ac. And we all can testify that it worked. He em ployed thousands, Ardent Spirits was the best agent he could possible have, ami this evil influence has tempted from ttie highest to the lowest evoi since. Cod see’ng th's evil in the world warnes the pooplo, “Look not upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth ite Color in tho cvp, at last it bitelli like a ■MMpent ami stingetb like an adder ’ Ami to think some of the best men of our country have fallen by its power. He also said it was commonly the case that every teni]iernnc« lecturer had at one time l>eea a drunkard—not so with him—though ne bad an only brother that it had overpowered end he ex peeled to fight the demur (alchoho!) as long -s he lived. lie says dealing in spiritons liquors or those that do it are not dealing in n legitimate buvness Ireiji his stand point, “a legal transaction is proven by what y..u 1a vs to show, you show the article, whatever it may be, and bis friends would say you have purchased a new suit of clot lias or a diess for his wile or something foi bis children, he has something to show >r some value for his money.
