TO THE PUBLIC.
David Ilutnc sayß, “That one is apt
to become vain who speaks long of
hiuHtclf”. But 1 will ask the indul
gence of the teadei 8 the Times for a
few words which refer more to mv«elf
than the public in general.
Sometimes we receive communica
tions, and hear it intimated, also as if
pome doubts were entertained as to the
success and perm a nancy of the Times.
Now I wish it clearly understood, that
it is mr desire that al ! , if there he any
who entertain such thoughts, to keep
them to themselves. In taking hold
of this paper and the responsibility,
( and I feel the responsibility ) it
was with no intention or expectation
of failing. The matter and circum
stance were too well considered. Icon
si h-r my interest too well identified
with Dade comity and too much a*
stake to fail. It is my desire to make
Dade county my home, I irav have

injustice they will have it all by them
selves. I have confidence in the ] co
p!« of Dade or 1 would not have under

coiicort of action.

nut *hiuk you can live and client the
world out of what you really are. You
can not waste the early days of your
life and then at the time you wish,
change your course and accomplish the
same results for good, had it been
otherwise. You may m after days
change your manner of thinking and
acting to a great extent; and if you
will sit down and neither do or attempt
to do anything, all will go on smooth
ly and the devil will not disturb yaor
ease and past li r c. But just attempt to
accomplish some laudable end, lot God
or your country and see whether or
not the world has forgotten your past
life. Every evil acton ot your life will
be brought against you to destroy your
influence. There are men living to-day
with a horning desire to do something
towards elevating their fellow tnan
morally and intellectually, but can
scarcely, if at all, turn a wheel in that
dirction from the only fact, that their
past, lives are not consistent with the
psefient. God will forgive and forget
your past actions if evil, but when you
come to the point where you want the
world to do the same, you may expect
trouble.
Spencer Tknn , June 9. I have
concluded to give ycu a few items from
here, as a good many of your readers
have an interest in this place and
some ot its people.
Old Burritt College is sacred in the
of a good many “Dadeitos”, who in
the happy ante belluui days were here.
Messrs. J. C. Taylor, VYabli Paris,
John Hannah, Bent Cole, Shook
Tace and the lamented Dr. W. E.
Brock all have records on file here.
Just behind the church is the house
built by Mr. Henry Smith and just
across thE street is one built by Mr
W II Hatfield. Yes there is much to
remind us of those we knew in our
boyhood. This town has improved
greatly since the new college was built.
We have a magnificent building and
a fine piosperous school. I tell you,
they make us toe the maik here, We
are now looking forward to the exam
ination and exhibition which begins
on the 9lh ot July and ends on the
11th. A great many attend these ex
ercises, and we anticipate a glorious
time. And then for the two weeks va
cation. 1 tell you we will talk to the
girls till their heads and hearts will
ache; for we do not get to say a word
to them during tiie session. Mr. Editor
yon may talk about your cyclones,
your earth quakes and ship wrecks,
but they do not camnare to a fellow
having to look at beautiful young la
dies every day for a session, without
being allowed to say a word to them;
but the old President says we must
bide our time. Well, it is a long lane
that never turns.
Prof. W. 11 Sutton and family
arc well and happy. The Prof., lias
a good thing heu*. He has made many
friends at this place. Ho is a little
bine this week, he intended going fish
ing last Saturday, hut it rained, so he
could not go, and his face is as long as
your arm over it. lie says be has been

but liis heart osten goes back to Mart

Mr Editor we invite you anil any of
our Dade county friends to atted-1 our

If you will allow me the space in
your columns, 1 will give vou a few
dots fioni heieand hereabouts. Quite
a severe wind with a little rain yes
terday evening. The corn that is of
auy size is blown down so Tufa "that it
will be almost impossible to plow it.
The wheat shocks are scattered and
uncapped, so if it continue* to rain it
will damage it considerably.
I understand that J F Allison and
some others intend to build a school
house near the Stephens and Foicster
mill. They contemplate building'a
good end nice bouse, and painting it,
and it will belong to no church, but
will be a school house exclusively.
Rev. L. N Brock held a two days
meeting last week, under a brush arbor,
near the Primitive Baptist church
house, Mt. Zion. The Missionary
Baptist arc preparing to build a church
house, some fifty yards east of the
Primitive Baj list, but it seems like
they are making slow speed at it.
Bazil Smith, of (bis place, lias as
nice a piece of corn as I have seen this
season. Bazil is an energetic vonner
man Mr. Henry Smith has his hack
in good running older, ami is just
waiting and scratching his head for
the harder to begin gathering at the
Ssriags. Sulphur Springs Ala., is on
a boom; it has four store houses, inclu
ding family groceries and another one
which is being erected. It will be a
nice litte town in a few years, if it
continues to improve.
Miss Fannie Nisbct has been quite

Mrs. John Slayton has been Buffering
for some time with the tooth-ache, but
has as yet to have it pulled. G A It
Bible exerted bis muscular s’rength on
it, but t lied to move it.
The citizens of thi* com unity have
organized a debating society at Mt.
Zion. Question for last meeting (last
Satnrdaynigbt) was: Resolved that it
would be ot more interest t> the peo
ple ot Dade Co., to send C M Tatum

decision being left to the house, l)t.
Lumpkin was selected almost t<> a unit.

The Senatorial contest in this dis
trict. promises to be somewhat warm.
There arc several candidates in the
field, already, in Walker county. That
county under the rotation system, is
entitled to the Senator for the next
term and, as we learn, it is proposed
to hold a county convention there and
name the candidate. An incorrect
idea seems to prevail to the effect that
it is the light of a county not only to
claim the Senator but fo dictate to
the other counties which one of sever
al candidates they shall support. The
rotation rule is working very well and
theio is no dispositio on the part ol
the part of the oilier counties so far as
we enow to abrogate it. But. we hold
that if the Democratic party of the
district is to bo bound by the action of
a convention, it is just and proper
that all of the counties should be rep
resented in it. Of several aspiror.ts in
one county the other counties should
have the riget to express their prefer
ence the whole district should be
consulted in making the selection.
Concerning the advisability of hold
ing a district convention, under the
circumstances, there can be no ques
tion. It, as a party question, is light
and pioper, now, as it lias ever been,
for the , aity ol 11 it* di«trict to choi.se
its candidate from among the con
testing aspirants But, the support ol
no county which has not an opportnni
ty. at least, to be heard can de consis
‘ently claimed.—[Catoosa Courier. |
Rcottsboro Ala., jpil is still well fill
ed with felons. There are ton charged
with capital offences: eight for murder
and two for rape. The citizens are
strongly incensed at the number of
atrocious crimes committed and aie de
termined to put such lawlessness down.
One great trouble, when public feel
inggs get wroiifTht up to such a height,
aud so deeply intent upon avenging
those crimes, is, that some poor inno
cent personis apt to suffer for tl.e cri
