Wo appreciate all compliments to
our paper and wo have received many
not only through our contributors hut
othciwisc. We would prefer not to
publish any tiling of the kind: First,
because it appears too much like com
plimenting ourselves; second, because
wc do not think it will any force
to our paper; third, because wo wish
every one to do his own thinking and
it he does not see fit to subscribe for it
it is bis own right; fifth it is better to
po our duty in»every calling faithfully,
and let the world find it out of itself,
without our trying to impress it with
oar importance. If any of our lenders
or contributors wish to way anything
complimentary to our paper, wc are
glad to receive it, but be very careful
when yon intend' it tor publication
Aunt i’oliio you laid a very strong
claim on the interest of the papor, and
you deserve it, for your contributions
add no little amount to its interest;
but you arc not the only one.
IOIKT or INQUIRY,
We can challenge any county in the
State, compared with cur’s in popula
tion, for tho most work tor the Court
oi Inquiry. Sulphur Springs has
sent in its Reprcsouative. One Wiley
McDuffie, col., for an “assault” upon
the house of James Shirly, at Sulphur
Springs. He at first denied the charge,
but finding the evidence too strong for
lum, he waived farter examination and
was brought down Monday by sheriff
Byrd. Can’t Cule City scud us in
one?
S€OTTSROKO KIAXCING
Wc would be glad to give our read
ers ail extended account of the triple
hanging at Scottsboro, Ala., but our
space is too limited.
They met their fate with considera
ble humility, not like a great many
criminals do. All three were baptised
by immcision, and the sacrament was
administered to them awhile before
death. All denied being guilty of the
charge till the last, and professed a
preparation lor the eternal beyond.
Tdeir persistence in their innocence
and the sympahy which they natural
ly awakened, has had a tendency to
produce a question as to their guilt, n
mong a great many people of Jackson
County, but when we consider the o v
idence, the conclusion of guilt forms,
within our mind with the highest de
gree of moral certainty, but still wc
can only regard it as one of the fallible
works ot mankind. There is often th e
question, Why a final judgment? W
think that there aro facts in this cas c
which make it a liececsily.
