Though it may be a seeming loss to his bereaved parents, yet his gain; and tq his immediate fiiends’and associates he leaves a life, though short worthy of imitation. io\uniKi;i;L\non The minds of our people have been and sre agitated to an extent over the convict or fiee labor question. That public sentiment is against convict-la bor is afact. But what must we do with out convicts? is another question. It is admited that it is a hard question to legislate upon. Place them where we may, they will be an expense or detri ment iu some way. Bnt we are in clined to believe, that if they ccnld he distributed to all public works in small numbers, they could be utilized by the companies, be of no expense but of small revenue to the State, and com paratively of no detriment to free-labor We do not believe it is right or good policy, to give one corporation or com pany exclusive controll of ihem, most espeialy when rt.would enrich them in a short while To pen them up in the penitentiary or some work shop, would conflict with not only common free labor bnt skilled labor; and would probably be of more expense to the State. We think tho plan of distri bution getting fnll pay for their .vork and more of free laborers ge to farm ing if public works are-crowded, would be lhe best reined A. JOE BROWN & WHISKY Saturday week the candidates for representative spoke at Rising Fawn, considerable excitement and feeling existed during and was produced by the addresses tfcc. Whiskey and Joe Brown were the leading topics. As public opinion is so different in regard to the questions and the feelings so intense it would be an act ot foolish ness for us to venture anything for ei ther side or idea.
