Geohoe W Hughes T C Dade Co Ga. —of— Miss Martha Sammie Love I will, not aitempt to desciibe my feelings on the reception of a telegram last Thursday evening announcing the death of my very dear cousin, i\l iss fSammie Love. We called Iter Sam nie; a name in which •'lie always felt >t piide, as it was that of her fathei whom she had never seen, who was taken, and died away from his own home, by the enemies our Southern homes. A few weeks before her death she had left her home in Marion equi ty, Tennessee, for Moore county, where she intended taking charge of s music class. She had not been there long, when she took quite ill, and on the 30th day of October, 1881, at 5 o'clock a. m , her Savior took her to the home Ho had gone to prepare for those upon whom lie had set 11 is seal and called His own, aged twenty years ten months an 1 niue days. Her immortal spirit ha l cn ssed the river that devides ti ne from eternity; an l on the day fol lowing we 'crossed with her remains for the last time over the Tennessee As we crossed that rolling river, the river that will always he associated with the memories of the long ago, the pleasure and boyish pride with which I used to row her ove. its surface, some times smooth and calm and at other times rough with i;s rolling wa ters, came vividly and touchingly be fore my memory. How little I thought then that some future day I would cross that river with her lifeless form • It seems that I shall never gaze upon that liver again, without thinking of Sammie. I have wandered from the better part of her life.. But if c mid return one moment from s?er c home in glory, and read what I have said in associating tliat beautiful river with her memory, would she except? Her home on its bank, near enough to hear the murmuring and bleaking of its waters, when ihe rising winds 1 would roll tnem up: some bow, some thing tells me, No; but that a happy smile would come over her angelic face, to know that, that liver and its associations had not been forgotten. To tmn our thoughts to herself, how sad it is to know that she has left us, a doting mother, sisters and a brother, fond relatives end friends, to cheer our lives no more with her pheasant and amiable disposition, to while away no more pleasant hours with her soft j sweet voice ami music! But, then, bow pleasant to feel and know, that ere confiding, true and artless heart, ere she had felt but tew if any, ot tri als and disappointments of this life, she was called to realize and enj>>y all of Heaven It almost seems that she [ was too puie for this world, and God j wanted her to adorn the. courts of j Heaven*. She had lived a life pure and Christ-like enough, to leave her friends rich legacy; a life fraught with such a spiiitof gentleness and inno eense, that to remember her. must al ways draw our hearts nearer to God, raise out thoughts to a higher and purer atmosphere, and cause us with renewed energy to press on to victory over all things through our Savior, Her life was short, but not in vain. The pure and the good, and those that 1 are nearest and dearest, are often the! first taken from us; and perhaps it is j best, for if we could always have them : with us, we would love life too well.
