Expert testimony in lnvacy cjpesnot

China. The Pekin Ga7.erne relates
that a lunatic in that city, who, in a
paroxysm of maduass, murdered his
graudniotiur tykit a vegetable knife,
was summarily executed in the disa
greeaule manner kuown as the “slic

says that parricides and mAstricideb

saving clause concerning the insanity
of the prisone r . Kx,
John Wasi.r.v once said, “Zeal for
opinions is not zeal for religion.” We
tear to much “zeal tor opinions,, still
weaken and dissipates the power of the
Church. lu the noise of controversy
the very nature and purpose of religion
are often forgotton. No greater waste
can be shown than is founu among the
rival sects of religion. 1 lie sects ciowd
n to 6m31l places and erect useless
houses of worship. They neglect the
poor, ignorant classes who are not
self-supporting. * They waste their
tnooc/, their time, and their energies,
in striving to build churches where
they are hot needed, just fot the sup

of the church-house* in America arc
tinneedcd. The cause of religion
iVotfld be stronger if about one-third
ol our churches in America were dis
organized and the money and men
employed to support them were trans

would be better supported and the
people better taught and better sup
plied with tha means of grace.

OUR WASHINGTON LETTER.
[From the correspondent of the Tunes]
Washington, Dee. 27, 1884.
The visit of the Hon. Sam. J, Ran
dall to the South, its design and prob
able results, are being actively can
vassed and opinions theicon are almost
as varied as the number offering them.
It cau he said, however that whatever
may he hack of it, Mr, Randall visit 8
the South in the interes of the iron in
dustry of the country, and believes
with those whom he directly replete
eiits, that is to the interes of the whole
country, and especially of the people of'
the South, that this great industry
should be encouraged and that the un
told wealth of oro lying in the h ovels
of the earth should be developed and
made to onrich the country. That
Mr. Randall will ho a very prominent
candidate for the Presidency imISNN
goes without saying, and to secure the
nominution, it is necessary that he
should t.iy and convert the Democrat
party to his way of thinking on the
Tariff question. Mr. Randall favors'
an entire wiping out of the system of
internal revenue taxation, and a reli
ance on impost duties to pay the en
tire expenses of the Government. This
of course, Would necessitate the lovy*
ing of duties that would be protective
in their operation. Without question
ing the wisdom or unwisdom of his
position, it can be said most unques
tionably that it is or will he, a itew dt»*
pariure for the Democracy, for frOm
its early days of infancy up to the
present, its record has been consistent
in opposition to protection and in fa
vor of a gradual leaning towards free
trade, or the lowest possible dutiable
rate on imports to afford the requisite
means to run the Government, eco
nomically administered,
The most important measure to he
handled by Congress after reassem
bling January 5 will la that ot the
Treaty with Nicaragua. In its dis
cussion and adoption or rejection will
be involved tbs question of American
supremacy on tbe American Continent.
Already the Eiu'opaan govornmemts
have indiceted through their diplomat
ic representative.B here that the Treaty
is obnoxious to them and they will
do every thing possible to accomplish
the defeat of its ratification.
In the interest Of the people,-iu the
maintenance of the position we should
Occupy it is tft be hoped that Congress
will not permit foraign influences,
foreign interests an J foreign bluster to
defeat the ratification of lids Teaty,
that in the interest and in furtherance
ot a distinctive Amcjican policy it
will be unanimously ratified.
It is time for America to assert su
premacy on this continent, and fully
time*whctl the United States should
prepare. Jy rebuilding bet navy and
building and strengthening lief coast
defences to give notice to tbe nation*
thousands of miles away that w*s aie
no longer infants in swaddling clothes
but full-grown men ready, willing and
capable of daciding what is the best
for America. H# B.
