Mrs M. L. Wells. National Organi

in Tennessee in the interest of the
Union. She has some hard material
to work on.
It has been discovered and said that
Mrs. Dudley, who shot O’Donovan
Rossa, has a suicidal mania, and lias
at times exhibited signs ot insanity.
II may be, but the public is not ic

Jackson county, Ala., is excited ov
er Prohibition. The e’ection conies off
to-day. Gov. St John delivered an
address to over two thonsannnd people
at Scottsboro the23rd inst;, which
was said to have converted “scores”
for Prohibition; but it is believed that
Prohibition will fail.
A Chattanooga correspondent of the
Cincinnati Enquirer says that the
b nies ot many animals were buried by
the contractors in the National Cem
etery at the former place, and that
many a tourists stop there and shed
tears over the remains of horses and
cows. The raccord shows that there
are 12,000 Federal soldiers buried in
the cemetery. Similar charges have
bEen made with reference to other cem
eteries. It is beleived however, that
they were aH nearly sensational, as
this one doubtless is.
JUDGE EMORY SPEER
How His Confirmation Was Se
cured by Senator Brown.
Washington Feb. 18 -The nomina
tion of Emory Speer tube distrfbt Judge
of the Southern District of Georgia
was confirmed by ♦ lie vote of Senate r
Joseph E. Brown, of Georgia, in the
Senate this evening. The Senate had
tvro executive sessions to-day to con
jtider this case. At the first executive
session nothing was done. At the sec
ond, which lasted several hours,
Speer’s nomination was confirmed by
one majority. Tin's vote was brought
abont by Senator Brown. lie was the
only Democrat who voted for Spec •
confirmation. Senator Colqirt hat
secured the adsence from the chain 1 er
in an unpaired condition of in t
enough Republicans to defeat. Speers
confirmation, if Senator Biown h >
either voted against S peel’s confirm t
■tion or had refrianed from voting <
pairing on the question. The Repnl
lican Senators who weie absent am
unpaired were, Plumb, Hale, an
Jones of Nevada. But Senator Browi
voted for Speer’s confirmation and s
carried Ins point, and he alone is re
sponsible for his confirmation.
In thespiriiel debate which prr
ceded the vote Senator Colqnit astoi
ished the Sen; t" ay his i b queue . >;
s|M)ke almost contii <ll ly for near I
two bonis. He related the history of
Emorv Speer’s entire career, drawing
a grfphic picture of his inconstancy to
both his personal and political Irienos
He said of him substantially what In
galls said last session about uis snp
postitious Senator from Alaska. He
dwelt upon all tbe objections and pro
tests made against Mr, S jeer’s coniir
mat ion. He liehl his own very cleverly
in his frequent encounter* with Sena
tor Bi-own. The latter, moved by
Senator Colouit’s fieiv criticism ol
Speer, went fin ther perilaps than lie
would othewise have done, and gave
Speer a warm personal endorsement,
lie urged his confirmation very strong
ly.
The South Carolina Senators spoke
strongly against Sjieers canfirmation.
Senator Brown had to do all the fight
ing for Fus side. It was the Earliest
fight he has known for years, and a
most dearly bought victory. Senator
Colquit received many compliments
upon tha ability and vigor with which
he conductel the oposition to Speer.
Who In KegpoiiNible For
The Evils of Iniem
l>e ranee?
There is something peculiar in the
fact that many of the temperance peo
ple recognize the rumdealer as the only
one who should hear the responsibility
of the crimes and evils that result
from the sale and use of malt and in
toxicating liquors. The entire war is
directed against the dealer, modified
by the people’s being particeps criji -
nis in only permittind tbe bar-room to
exist in a licensed or otherwise condi
tion. Every accessible means is use 1
to arouse tbe sympathies of tbe people
in behalf of tbe mothers, wives, sons,
brothers and drunken husbands, and
to excite si! the hatred and prejudice
against tbe dealer—the dealer as the
only person who commits the crime.
We do not wish this to be understood
as in defence of the liquor traffic.
As a matter of wrong or crime
the consumer ought to bear his part;
and when this is done we can safely
assert that there will not lie an over
large amount left for tlie dealer. It
simply turns on the question, Is oni
fiirst duty to society or our home?
The Bible and every sense of feeling
right answer: “To our home.” Can
any one imagine a crime more intense
than a man’s spending his daily earn
ings, earnings that be has solemnly
pledged to the companion of his life
tor something that only serves to rob
him ofhis reason and beggar bis fam
ily? He brakes his plighted vow, robs
his children of the necessaries of life
and file’s happiness, makes a wreck of
himself, and tbe dealer is held up be
fore the public gaze as tbe only crimi
nal. And what of the young lady who
permits a young man to pay bis ad
dresses to her. finally accepts bis
band in marriage, whom she knows?
or is unjustifiably ignoiant, to be
more or less addicted to the “bowl”?
or what of the young man who entraps
an innocent, confi ling girl, and brakes
bis pligted faith in the manner men
tioned? The Temperance movement
is designed to ultimately elevate the
.people and produce a better state o!
affairs, morally and civilly; and to ef
fect tbe end thase questions cannot b>*
discarded. Don’t try to eradicate oi
lemedy an evil to a beneficial extent
by compounding it G, G If.

Character
The pride of a unit or his degro 1 t
tiun arises frcni the nature of his
chaiacter. In some peopla, good and
evil are so mixcifcttp that it is difficult
to tell what posh'ioii in society they
should occupiy. 1 hey have no fixed
principles, oi definite object in view,
and theiefore change about, like a ves
sel with no rudder, at sea. Character
makes the useful member of society',
and charactei malm the demon. It
is the chracter of a person that we love,
when personal beauty an l all other at
tractions are gone. The man of char
acter is als > a man of nerve, though
liis associations be ever so bumble. It
his heart is right, and his eiitegritv
unshaken, lie will not fear to lace bis
fellow-men. It is here tiiat we form
our characters for eternity, and t hough
lemj tations and trials, like the deadly
Upas tree, throw their poisonous influ
ence over us, it is our priiviiige, ami
in oni power to rise aboue them. As
surley as a tree is known by its fruit,
so surley do we know men by their
’character. Character, whethor good
or bad, must and will show its sell in
time. Like murder it will out; no
I *
arts ot ours can hide it. Hypocrisy
with all its deceit ml attempts can
never conceal it, and character is what
makes the man or demon.
