Col E- W. Cole forme.ily known as
**K»ng Cole” in railroad parlance
has indentified himself with the tem
perance cause in tha State of Tennes

many of the representative men oi
Tennessee are identifying themselves
with the cause in the State.
Revenue officers in Tsmyessec are
reported to be “making hay while the

the parties they can, and, as is known
they are expert in extracting money,
a»l the only cent, from those arrested
It should be the first work of rcfoun
to remedy this iniquitous system. The
South, through the entire Republican
administration, has suffered insults,
and been harrassed by a hoard ot nn
tcrupulottb,heartless revenue officers.
In one ot the mi Idle Stales,
a lady, minister's wile, was brought
before a court charged with assault
upon her servant. She at first put in
a plea of not guilty, but finding that
the saloon men had snbsoribed S3OO
to aid her prosecution, she withdrew
the plea, and put in one guilty, and
was fined $5 and cost. She was strong
and working woman in the Temper

Matters are portentious of an out
break of hostilities between England
Russia. Still diplomacy now plays
such an active part in European af
fairs, that nothing can be calculated
as certain. In case it should occur,
neing two of the stongest militar ,
most extensive and wealthiest pow -
ers on the globe, its consequence and
magnitude of its results ciinnot be
conceived of, or, in the least, approx
imated. England now has her hands
full in other quartets of the world,
and Russia can transport her troops to
the seat of war within a few days,
while it would take England a month
or there might certainly be a fight.
The United States Supreme Court
lias ruled that the Edmunds bill on the
Mormon question as valid. This
places the inhabitants of the territo
ries under the sovereign control o
the United States government, aud
is viewed with amazement and regret
It is geneially considered as a posi
tion more opposed to a republican
form of government than any ever
given since the nation was formed,
and the Mormons feel that have been
unjustly dealt with. The situation
and evil to be remedied must be ac
cepted as oue that rises above the
consideration of all strictly civil law,
and should bo acquiesced in by the
people.
While Europe has been trying to
stir up serious trouble, the five little
independent republics of Central A
merica have not been idle. Those
republics—Costa Rica, Gantctnala,
Honduras, Nicaragua, and San Sal
vador—threw ofl the Spanish yoke in
1832. Since that tinta several a -
tempts have been made to unite them,
but was soon followed by the clash of
ernts and disolution. At the present
time the Gen. arrd President of Gau
temala issued a pub ic declaration
that he would assume command 01 ail
the military ftu' ce > a Central America
government seams to approve
the stap, but he is regarded as a bold
and had man, and the other pnvers
will protest and act agaittsS such
movements. If this war should oc

Last Friday night, we may say fov
tunats enough, to hear Henry Ward
Bet-cher. the noted Brooklyn preacher
and lecturer. We were late in arriving,
and did not hear the introductory and
begining. His subject, generally, was
the progress- of the present age, and
compared wit's the past, even, only,
two centuries ago. In speaking he
appeared to be perfectly conscious o‘
his mental powers and his mastery over
the subject, lie showed not the least
affectation*, even when applauded or
laughter creatod, (which seemed to lie
more than necessary, and more a fash
ion with the city people) Naturally,
he was somewhat abstruce, and it re
quired the perf< etly-undevided atten
tion of the mind to keep pace with
the flow of bis ideas and comprehend
the points and truthes they were In
tended to sustain and enforce. Intel -
igence was tliame of his subject. At the
time of our entrance lse was speaking
ot the marked between
woman of the present and the past
her inteligence and field of of action
broader ant more liberal now than in
the past. He illustrated in a forcible
way tlie power of |miad over matter.
He drew tlie lines between the igno
rant and the intelligent clear and dis
tinct, and that they would never
equalize neither socially nor politically
An intelligent people were more easily
ruled, and .the more capable of self
government, hence the necessity of a
broad, common, and liberal education
in our country.

Chief Executive. Aarthur was
regarded as a man unequal to Gar

parties looked upon him witli distrust;
Democrats as a bad and unscrupulous

“What fools we mortals are”, and

It appears that the Mormons are
making their most vigorous efforts in
the extension of their taith -polygamy
'They have increased the number of
their missionaries in Oregon and
Montana, and their policy seeuis to be
to plant colonies wherever there is
any prospects that they will flourish.
It is conceded, therefore needless to
say, that every effort should be used to
extenuate this infamous bolt in oni
nation. Some Republican journals
have attempted to make it appeal
that the present administration is tol
erant towards the practize, but the
President’s inaugural address certain
ly does not beai the least stamp to tol
eration, and we hope its beneficent
effects will extend far enough to blot
ont this stain within the next four
