TRENTON, GEORGIA, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, iBBS.
ROAD WORKING,
[ , t
One day this Week Afe’adrifted into
a conversation and enltercliangc of
ideas with some of the “pi ominenep*'
of our town on our present systeffi li,f
road working. A few thoughts on the
subject may be of interest, and as- to
their worth all can receive tlftmAwith
respect, as they wish, , . >,> >.
Notwithstanding, the present
tt regarded ns one of injustice andem
eqtiality, we are much ertcUned to fa-
Vtn\, As a cmespondtM/in an ex-
0 1
change says: “Yes, we • lurre had a
protracted road working. - ' { like tlie
old-fashion way of working the
roads. All •classes cotne togetiher and
work and talk and joke and spjji yarns
and enjoy themselves; it brings us all
close together, and begets a general
social feeling; it’s neighborly ”
It might be well enough to levy an
ad valorem tax Kuplemcntary to tbe
present system, but we do not think it
exjiedn-nt to abolish the “old fashion
way.” The fact of all the neighbors
meeting together after their crops are
“laid-by” ar.d having a jolly and so
eiil time Is not the only consideration
in favor cf the present system. There
are legitimate reasons. Every man
has equal power and l ight at the polls,
irrespective of social standing or prop
eity qualifications, ami equal protec
tion in personal liberty and rights, but
this is tbe only instance where all
bear an canal burden in a public ben
efit, and while, property alone bears
all other"public expenses. And one
is liable to road duty only from sixteen
to fifty, while there is no suspension to
taxation, in sinning all up w.e canm t
sec .midi, if any, inequality in, tin?
system; besides, it is a tact that one,
who has no Interest in landed estate;
may have a greater i»terestt’<m £ootl
public toads than one who has.'* I** 1 **
