A PITIFUL STORY.
The Terrible Poverty Existing Among the
Laborer* in Cl tit)*.
The superintendent of the Pittsburgh
Bethel, an institution which furnishes
cheap meals to workingmen, tells some
pitiful stories to a reporter. He says:
“A few weeks ago a man came to me.
lie drives an oil wagon and gets $1 per
day. He was paying $1.50 for board at
a boarding-house. He has a wife and
child in West Penn Hospital, and he
was disheartened and discouraged be
cause he could not make enough to
keep them there till they were well. 1
told him to try the home. Ho is now
with us steadily, and as regular its Sat
urday night comes his money goes to
his wife.
“One d\v a voting fellow, a commer
cial traveler, came to me with tears in
his eyes. He said he wanted to pay a
man’s board for two weeks. He was
passing down Duquesne Way, lie said,
near the hotel, where a lot of men were
putting down pipe. ‘Hang you!'
yelled the big red-faced foreman to one
of the men, ‘why don't you lift:”
“ -Indeed, sor, an’ 1 can’t lift it. I'm
too wake.’
“ ‘What is the matter with you?’ said
the foreman.
“ ‘Sure, sor, an’ it’s two wakes oi’vc
been atin’ nothin’ but foive-ccnt males,
an’ oi’ve no strength left.’
“ ‘Well, why don’t you get better
meals, then?’ said the foreman.
“‘lndeed, sor,” replied the man, “1
can’t; I've a wife and six babies ave me
own in Cleveland, an’ it's all I can do to
kape them front starvation, sor. If I
should take any thing better than I do,
sure an’ the faces ave every one of them
would be lookin’ up at me from the very
plate I was atin’ front.’”
“The drummer bought two weeks’
supply of tickets for the man, and ten
cent meals at that. The story was a
true one, and the man is working in
the city yet, earning a dollar a day,
and sending four dollars a week of it
home. I tell you these stories to illus
trate the statements I made that these
■men are not tramps or outcasts. The
majority of them are sober and indus- -
trious men; men who are willing to
work, and who do work. But they are
better off than the men who can’t get
work. Have you ever noticed a load
of coal going through the streets, and
from two to half a dozen seedy-look
ing men following it. walking a mile
or two, may be, to earn ten or twenty
cents to buy themselves a meal? There
are hundreds of such men who are
anxious to work that come to us every
week. Lots of men are now with us
whose families live out in these coun
try towns, and who have come here to
work on pipe lines, etc. We know, for
many of them bring their money to us
to send to their families. There is no
doubt but that many of these men owe
their condition to liquor, but not a ma
jority of them, and nearly all are
anxious to work; but there is no work
to do.” •
“How about the tramps?”
“The tramp, ag he existed five -or six
years ago, is a thing of the past. They
have died, got into prisons and work
houses, ami otherwise disappeared.
There are but a few of them left, and
while the number of men out of employ
ment and in need is on the increase, the
tramps are decreasing. I don’t know
why it is, but I find such to be the case.
I suggest no remedies, but l merely
state the facts as I find them. Every
year finds the number of men out of
employment largely on the increase,
and growing desperate and disheart
ened. It is a question which must be
taken into serious consideration sooner
or later.” —Pittsburgh Dispatch.

LUNG Gloucester. Mass., writes: “Nearly five years ago. I
was taken sick with a disease regarding which the
nierjrer three physicians who attended me were unable to
UlokfiOk. agree. One of the foremost physicians in Boston
■“ '■ called it a tumor of the stomach, and treated me tor
that, nearly killing me with physic; another, a Uoinceopathio phy
sician. thought I had consumption. When taken sick. I weighed
157 pounds. I suffered from a heavy cough, night - sweats,
kidney troubles, etc., and was reduced so rapidly that my physi
cians gave me up. They were unable to help me in the least.
At that time I weighed but ninety pounds, and had not been able
to lie down, but had to sit up in order to breathe. I had been eon
fin' 'd to my room for six months, expecting to die. I was so bad
at times that I could not allow any one to come into my room,
as I could not talk; nor was I able to walk. I picked uii one* f
your memorandum books on the floor of the hotel
0 ii/rr) where I was boarding, and after reading it I began
OflrkU taking your ‘Golden Medical Discovery,’ and tiie
llio I irr bottle brought me around so that I could walk
nlo LIFE, around the room all day. I soon began to build
up, and gained so rapidly that it astonished me. I
iave taken no other miHlicine since then, and have used perhaps
twenty bottles in all of this medicine. I stopped taking it in
August, one year ago. I feel that it has saved my life. I now
weigh about lf>o pounds, and I think, and inv friends with me,
that this medicine saved my life. It certainly "is -.vorih its weight
In gold, and I consider it a wonderful remedy from its effect in
curing all my ailments.”
