POETRY.
For All Who Die,
The following poem was regarded by Ed
gar A. Poe ns the most beautiful and touch
ing of its kind in the languago ;
It hath been said for all who dio
Tliero is a tear,
Fome*pnining, bleeding heart to sigh
O’er every bier ;
But in that hour of pain and dread
Who will drew near
Around my humble couch’and »hed
One farewell tear.
Who’ll watch tho fast departing ray
In deep despair,
And tho spirit on its way
With holy prayer ?
What mo’rncr around my couch will come
In wonisjof'woe
And follow me to my long home
Solemn and slow ?
When lying on my efirthly bed
In icy sloop
Who then by pure affection led
Will eouio *nd weep ?
By the pale moon implant the rose
Upon my breast
And bid it'choor my darkirepose,
My lonely rest]?
Could I*bnt*know"when I’am sleeping
Low in the ground
One faithful heart would then bo keeping
Wath all around,
As if some gem lay shrined beneath
That cold sod’s gloom,
’Twould mitigate the pangs of death
And light the tomb.
Yes, in that hour if I could feel
From ttc Halls of glee
And beauty’s pressure one would steal
In secrecy
And cont» and sit orjstand by mo
In night’s deep noon,
Oh, I would'ask of memory
No othet boon. *
But ah, a lonelier fate is mine,
A deeper woe.
From" all I’ve/loved ‘in youth’s [sweet
time
I’soon must^go.
Draw'aronnd me my palo robes of white
In a dark spot
To sleep through death’s long dream
less night,
Lone and forgot.

As a means to defeat the education
al bill, its opponents are studying the
rules of the House with the purpose of
obstructing its passage by point of or
der. They confidently assert their
power to defeat it. If they can do so
at all it will only be by complicated
machinery of a few Members of the
House to defeat the will ol a large mu
jority.
O’Neii,, chairman of the committee
on labor has iutiodnced a bill in tlie
House providing for the'settlement ot
disputes between labor and capital by
an arbitration Commission. At first
the bill did not meet with a favorable
reception, but has rapidly gained due
consideration. What its chances an
for passing, are not yet determined.
It is hoped that some means tiu-y, in
the near future, be provided to settle
those differences destructive to both
labor and capital.
Ox the committee to which was re
feried the bill to abolish Civil Service
Commission, Hon. Judson C Clem
ents made a minority report favorii%
the passage of the bill. He advances
several arguments favoring the bill, in
which |must be admitted practical
strength, Oue fact that should he
noted by Mr. Clement.s constituents,
is bis strong support of an affiliation
with his party, lie is a Democrat of
the truest color, and uncompromising
ly advocates a Democratic administra
tion.
Gen. John 15, Gordon, is spoken of
in our comity as the choice for the
next Democratic nominee for governor
of Georgia. Outside of our own coun
ty we have not noticed anything said
as to his being a probable candidate
ltefore the convention, therefor#, we
are not prepared to say as 10 bow the
Htate-at large would be disposed to
confer the office upon him. At any
rate in our opinion, which will be en
dorsed by many in our county,Ge< rgia
could not confer that office upon any
one of her sous mote gifted, talented
and worthy of the uuot. •

CONVICT CAMPS.
State of Georgia, ) i V .},
Dade County, j " ° “ 1
committee appointed by the Grand
Jury at the present term of the Su
perior Court, to examine the convict
camps in said cairn tv, make and sub
mit the following report to wit :
We first, visited the camp at Cob
City, where we wore courteously re
reived by tlie authorities, who with
evident pleasure conducted us through
the works and the various camps at
that place. We find a very small pet
cent, of sickness among the convicts
there, the worst cases being of a chton
ic nature and contracted before sent to
prison. We find the sanitary condi
tion of the camps in extra good condi
tion, and the mines where the
work, arc well ventillated and
!y drained. We find their diet excel
lent, the substantial necessaries oGife,
good, wholesome, and plentifully fur
nished with a sufficient amount o!
vegetables always supplied. As to
work* required of them, we think it
very light. We find that the author
ities daily tasks wml that they
are generally completed by 3 o’cloel.
p. in. each day, then the convict has
the balance of the day for his own
purposes, by means of which some of
them accumulate som* money. The
intention of the au(iiorities in this r<-
spect, tvMrthtk is ?%nmendab!e, but
whether or not it is conducive to tl.e
public goo f we are not prepared to
snv. We find they are well clothed and
comfortably quartered, and tlmL. tin
medical attention is all that can be
reasonably required, and that the con
victs are humanely treated by those
who have them in charge.
We next visited the Ris
ing Fawn, where we were received ii
like manner, as at Cole City. *Y\,
If.id that there are seventy-one fton
vhts einploved tliete, consisting of
Inn;-whites and G 7 blacks, three ot
whom are females. Me find the treat
ment and the general management ol
the convicts at Rising Fawn, to I><
equal if not superior to that of Cob-
City. With this addition, which we
particularly noticed, that the authon
ties in charge have furnished for T he
use of the convicts, a library consist
ing ol Bibles, Testaments and Sunday
Selim 1 literature. Wc think this act
wi.rty of imitation, and hope that ii
will lie adopted at all ot the camps for
the improvement of those unfortunates
who have committed crime and ate
suffering punishment therefor.
We terrdcj our thanks to ths officer)
of the various camps for the courtesies
and kindness extended to us while with
them. Respectfully submitted, March
