report of Committee to examine
CONVICT CAMPS.
State ok Georgia, [ Wet li e
Dade County. )
committee appointed by the Grand
Jury at the present term of the Su
peri or Court, to examine the convict
camps in said county, make and sub
mit the following ieport to wit :
We first, visited tiie Camp at Cole
City, where tVC were Courteously re
eetved by the authorities, who with
evident pleasure conducted us through
the works and the various camps at
that place. We find a very small per
cent, of sickness among the convicts
there, the worst cases being of a chton
ic nature and contracted'before sent to
prison. We find the sanitary condi
tion of the camps in extra good condi
tion, and the mines where the convict,,
work, are well ventiilaied and proper
ly drained. We Hud their diet excel
lent, the substantial necessaries of life,
good, wholesome, and plentifully tup
nislnd with a sufficient amount ot
vegetables always supplied. As to
work required of them, we think it
very light. We find that the author
ities give daily tasks and that they
are generally Completed by 3 o’clock
p. in. each day, then the convict lias
tlir> balance of the day for his own
purposes, by means of which some of
them accumulate some money. The
intention of the authorities in this re
spect, we think is commendable, hi t
whether yr not it is conducive to the
public goo 1 we are not prepared to
say. We ft ml they are well clothed and
comfortably quartered, and that the
medical attention is all that can be
reasonably required, and that the con
victs are humanely treated by those
who h»vo them in charge.
We next visited the camps at Ris
ing Fawn, where tve were received in
like manner, ns at Cole City. W$
find that there are seventy-one con
victs employed them, Coniisting of
four whites oud 67 blacks, three
wham are females. We find the treat
ment and the general management of
the convicts at Hi dug Fawn, to lie
equal il not superior to that of C\ le
City. With this addition, which we
particularly noticed, that the author!
ties in charge have furnished for 'he
use of the convicts, a library consist
ing ol llibles, 'iestaments and Sunday
School literature. Wo think this am
worty Of imitation, and hope that it
Will be adopted af all of the camps for
the impiovemeut of those unfortunates
who have committed crime and are
suffering punishment therefor.
We tender our thanks to the officers
of tile various camps for the courtesies
and kindnetjs extended to us while with
them. Respectfully submitted, March
19 th. 1886.

We have had a little agitation i s
to thebaic of wlnskdy J.i oOf town
for the current year. It is tacitly
understood that it will he sold, buf
not in quantities less than a gallon
On investigation, vve have not met
with a siugld voter in t.he corpora
tion but that admits the existence’ of
and traficing in whiskey, is degrad
ing and damning in its effect. Of
course there ttinf be a few' who will
not make such an admission, but they
are far in the minority; It is simply
a grounding of arms and yielding a
victmy to ibe greatest modern evil.
But white this is true with the voting
population of our town, yet it is a
significant fact tfiat tint ladies of out
town, with few exceptions, have re
ended their names “against the
Tuoso who aie against the whiskey
shop, should note w ith pride this fact.
Notwithstanding, the (/position argues
that the tVotk is out, womans of sphere,
yet. no evidence could exist more
puteutious of a final victory.
Woman is against it ; Christianity
is aganst it ; Heaven is against it !
Ti en let every' one inteieaied in lu .
inanity be against it.
Interesting Experiences.
Hiram Cameron,, Furniture dealer of C -

three year* have triert remedy on ,h<
market for Stomach and Kidney di*ordere.but
got no relief, un'il I used Electric Bitters.
Took five bottles and am now cured, and
think Electric Bitters the best blood purifier
in the world.”— Maj. A. B. Beod, of West
Liberty, Ky., used Electric Bitters for an old
standing K idney affection, and says: ••Noth
ing has ever done me so mnch good as Eirj
tric Bitters.” —Sold at fifty cei s a Louie by
T. H. B. COLE.
One of the must interesting cases of
the court just adjourned, wag the Da
vis—Frizzell cost}' The people of the
section about Morg&nvill* seemed to
he intensely interested, and very slight
ly exaggerated to say, all were snm
nioi ed and examined as witnesses.
About two days were consumed in the
trial ; from Wednesday mu iig to
Thursday night about 12 odlock.
About one ami one quarter acres ol
laud was all involved. One peculiari
ty in the case, was the contrasting
time between the hearing cl the case
and that Consumed in making and re
turning a verdict, which was only
fifteen minutes, and in favor of Davis
the plaint tf The case must have
cost the county $250.
