ol any monopoly or corporation.
Ben Brock came veiy near getting
house aud all burned up last Sunday
night. He retired leaving tlie light
burning by the bed in a chair, and
awaking up, found that it had burst*
ed. Tiie oil rapidly spreading over the
llooi was soon flaming fire, ami had it
not, been for Mr. Brock’s quick pres
ence of mind in smothering tho flames
with a quilt, there might huvo been
sciious insults.
As wRI be seen, S. C. Ilale, is an
nounced as a cahdidate for Repieseni
ative. Mr. Hale has served the county
in that capacity several times hereto
fore. And jibing * one of the oldest,
most highly esteemed and respected
citizens fin our county, comment
from our pen seems almost superfluous.

We attended the sacramental scr-j
vices of tho Missionary Baptist church,
at Pine Grove, last Sunday. The
congregation departed from their old
rule of “close communion, and ex
tended an invitation to all Christian
people, irrespective of denomination to
join them at the communion table.
It was accepted by several. r J he

commands our highest admiration.
