FRIGHTFUL DISASTER.
Five Men Killed and a Score More or Less
Injured—Fall of a Ituilding In Course of
Erection. •
New York, Oct. 17.—A building intend
ed for a parochial school-house fell to-day
when half completed, and five men’s lives
were crushed out in the wreck. A score
of other men were more or less injured.
The school-house was to have been at-’
tached to the Mission church of Our Lady
of Mount Carmel, in One Hundred
and Fifteenth street, whose pastor,
the Rev. Father Kirner, was super
intending Its Construction. This
was carried on with zeal, but was incom
patible with safety in building operations.
The responsibility for tho disaster—it can
scarcely be called an accident—is directly
placed upon the Rev. Father’s shoulders
by the fact that he was warned of tjie
dangerous features of his piethod of
building, but persisted in them. That
he had no appreciation of tho risk
he was running is shown by the fact that
he Was Constantly in and about the
building while tho work was going
on, and was one of those seriously in
jured by i's fall. He was up at the top of
the structure when it fell, and was dug
out of the ruins very near to the body of a
man killed in tho wreck. A radical defect
in construction was in the length of tho
span of floor beams, which reached the
whole thirty feet across the building
without central support. The wall,
originally sixteen inches thick, was in
places cut down to only eight by re
cesses for building in book-cases. Too
many window openings still further
weakened the walls. Twenty-seven men in
all are believed to have been the entire force
at work iu the building. With a slight
premonitory rumble and shake the struc
ture went down with them. An instant later
a cloud of dust and a shapeless mass of
brick and broken timbers lay heaped up in
place of the towering walls and half-com
pleted building.
Arizona Territory.
Washington, Oct. 17. — C. Meyer Zulick,
Governor of Arizona, in his annual report,
estimates the population of the Territory
at 00,000, an increase of nearly 50,000 over
the census estimates of 1880. The aggre
gate assessed valuation of the taxable
property for the present year is $26,313,500,
an increase of nearly $6,000,000 over 1886.
By reduced expenditure, increased taxable
values, and the gradual lessening of the
tax rate, the Territory is now absolutely
on a safe and healthful financial basis.
The agricultural possibilities of Arizona,
with proper irrigation, continues the re
port, can scarcely bo overestimated. Its
live stock interests are in a flourishing con
dition. Taken in the aggregate, the mining
industries of the Territory are on a safe
and promising basis.
Catholicism in the Public Schools.
Pittsburgh, Pa., Oct. 17.—Tho Roman
Catholic Sisters of Charity who were ap
plicants for positions as public school
teachers have withdrawn their applica
tions, because, it is claimed, the examina
tions they were subjected to was too vig
orous. Superintendent Lucltey, of the
Central Board of Education, has received
scores of letters and papers, all of them
denouncing the action of the Thirty-third
Ward School Board in electing a priest to
the position of principal. These papers
come from all parts of tho country.

six companies. The flames originated by a
lamp explosion in the laundry of the hotel
at 5:30 o’clock this morning. The flames
spread so rapidly that the employes of the
building escaped with difficulty. About a
dozen cottages on Lake View avenue were
damaged.
Thievish Gang Broken Up.
Wilkesbarre, Pa., Oct. 17.—A big gang

be used to penetrate the hiding-place of
the thieves, who were caught while

New Temperance Move at Chicago.
Chicago, Oct. 17. —Petitions were present
ed at the usual Monday morning meeting

—The water-wheel that runs the
