Senator Butler, ot South Caioliua,
is frequently called the handsomest
and best dressed man ?B (be Senate.
He astonished his brother Senators
last week by appearing in a new style
overcoat, which is said to be no over
coat at all, Int a large, thick cape of
rough gray cloth, which buttons
about the neck, and' 1 falls just below
the elbow. As lie walked along to
the capitol, be is said to have had
the air of a man conscious that he
was in the right, but a little ahead of
the Washington fashion. It is Sena
tor Hampton, we believe, whom the
ladies call the “sweetest man in the
world ” Altogether, South Carolina
is taking a prominent position iu na
tional gossip.
A government postal telegraph sys
tem is very apt to come before the
present Congress, but as to its adop
tion it will bo some succeeding Con
gress, The question has been to re
cently agitated to bo fully maturod,
besides it Las excited considerable
oposition. Whether the system un
der the control of the government
would be ot interest to the
great mass of the people, is an open
question. But, no question, that it
would bo of great advantage to the
Commercial interest.
President Cleveland is in a dilema
on the tariff question. His - Message
tiealt almost exclusively on this ques
tion, and be is too Democratic as re
gards the tariff to 6nit the protection
ists. In short, there is 6omo heavy
kicking from that side. A corres
pondent to the Constitution from
Birmingham seems to think that
“protection” is snch a big thing in
Alabama that the State would go
Republican on the President’s Mes
sage.
Tho terrible disaster that over
whelmed Northern China, submerged
eleven cities and destroyed thousands
of human beings caused scarcely a
ripple of excitement in this country,
llow little do the misfortunes of peo
ple widely separated from us, and
with whom we have little in common,
affect us, however great their mis
fortunes may be
Austria and Russia are not' on pa
cific terms. Both powers are massing
troops indicative cf offence or defence,
With* this exception, military- and
political affairs are qniet in Europe,
The condition of the Crown Prince of
Germany is more in favor of his re
covery. Every element or faetou in
Franco isuunsually quiet.
The last man to solve the problem
of perpetual motion is Mr. Thomas
W. Malone of Qallipelis, Ohio. The
men who discovered perpetnal mo
tion are a source of perpetual annoy
ance to the country.
The candidates for the coming
Republican convention are Blaine and
Sherman. Their strength is so near
equal that it is reasonable to suppose
that a “dark horse*’ will receive the
nomination.
Tariff Legislation of * some kind
may be expected ftom the present
Congress. To what extent, and on
\vh3t articles' the reduction will be
made hardly an approximate idea can
be formed.
8.-n Butler ought to sav something
about the Message. While other
candidates are speaking, shall the
great and glorious widow remain

Public business has made but slow
progress this week, A number of
bills were introduced iu the Senate
but tlie House is utiil in statu rpio.
The appointment of committees has
been delayed somewhat, bv the
TliOebe-Carliule contest. The House,
however, will get down to work ou
tiie sth of January, and will then dis
pose of business with dispatch. The
only day of any interest in the House
was on Friday, when Reed, of Maine,
opposed the motion of elate a, of Mis—
aouii, to adjourn fion» the 10th of
December to January 4. The mem
ber from Maine cli irged that the
Democrats were only delaying public
•business,, which Mr. Hatch and othci
members resented and claimed that it
would greatly expedite business to ad
journ until after the appointment of
the Committees., Reed also dclared
that his party was anxious for an op
portunity to vote to reduce, the tariff,
and the Democrats replied fba'. they
vsoon ,should have the opportunity, and
and that when they bad the opportu
nity last session they bad always
voted against tho reduction. In the
discussion the Republicans virtually
admitted that they were agreed to vote
lor the repeal o! the tobacco tax, and
as the Democrats have a!s > Wfewbe
expressed themselves, that one. ques
tion may bo regarded as settled.
It is lumoredVnnt Senator Chand
ler, of New Hampshire, is bittetly op
posing in committee the confirmation
of Secretary Lamar as Associate Jus
tice of the Sin preme Court, bn t there
is not the slightest doubt of his con
firmation. A few ol the Republican
Senators may not vote for it but
many of them will, and so before
many days tho Secretary will be a
Judge,
An important paper lai 1 before
Congress this week is an itulex of
Southern elaimS and claims referred to
the Comt of claims tinder the Bow
man act. It shows tfie total number
of claims referred to Congress—the
disallowed and barred cases—to be
some 22,268, represent ing in money
value $70,258,150. Many of these
clainiffara just and supported by the
best evidence, but barred because not
filed within the time allowed by the
net. It is believed that a day not far
distant all these cases will be reopened
and sent to the Court ol claims for
final adjudication.
The l’osf-Office Department lias
been the'busiest of all the departments
On Thursdays bids •<vero opened for
furnishing*™,ail-bags, locks, fasteners
RpdJJpbeUholders. There are some
5G bids submitted and they ranged
from one cent np to fifty cents. Th«v
were merely lor the use of the devices
by the Department, the Government
to pay for Hie material and manufac
ture. From 20,000 to 25,000 new
;bags are made for use in the Depart
ment every year, and so the patentee
of improvements in Mail bags are all
anxious* to have their inventions
adopted. The present bag in use lias
been used for 20 years past, but the
Government is anxious to have a bet
tor bag, and fo if any one of the bag ,"
submitted meets tho requirements i
will probably be adopted. The award
will not bo made before the 15lh of
next February,
The dead letter sale is now in pro
gress, and the Tost office Department
will icaltze many thousand of dollars
from the sale of jewelry and all other
conceiveable articles rent through the
mails and never delivered for the want
of proper address or other cause.
Many bargains are obtained by the
purchasers, and many instances can lie
cited where, for fitty cents and a dol
lar, gold watches and. diamond rings
have been purchased. The packages
are all sealed and no purchaser knows
what he buys until be opens his pack
age alter paying for it.
Nothing of national interest has
transpired thus week, and ail the
newspapermen have had little but
dry details-to write about. Something
may be worked up by the lext letter.

The officials of the A. G, S. rail
road claim that if their trains were
forced to stop at every county seat or
at the station nearest them, tho fast
trains will have to abandoned as they
could uot make up the t!;n a lost in
stopping, and tlie road would lose a
good deal in the wav of through pass
enger travel. The road passes through
eight counties and the fast trains
stop in fonr ' of them—at Attalla,
Birmingham. Tuskaloosa, and Akron.
There would only be tour stops more
to be made—at Fort Payne, Whitney,
Eutaw and Livingston. Allowing
five minutes at each place, the time
lost would amount to only twenty
minutes, which could be caisly made
up, or if the schedule was legthened
twenty minutes it would make r.o dif
ference in ihe travel. We have heard
however, that tbs c< mpany is willing
to compromise the matter by pn'ting on
an additional train. The officials it
is said are willing, if the fast trains

Love of Brothers amu.Sisters,
A girl is generally unselfish to her
brother,. You dont often bear ot a
voung-ftdlo.w giving up bis pocket
money to his sister; ho usually growls
if she wants him to take 'lter to tho
theatre. But if a boy’s m a little
trouble bis sis'ers always stands to
iiitn like a trick. SheTlj"not { only
give up her pocket money, but she’ll
go and wheedle some more out of her
father to give to him. She’ll fib,
she’ll prevaricate, she’ll beg., lle'li
hang about outside until she gets it
to him. Then he’il grab his hat and
bolt out ot the house. And she docs
not. mind if he does not thank her
particularly. lie’s her brother, and—
wet! —a —wornaiFalwavs looks at a
kindness done to. a man as its own re
ward. A boy can generally wheedle
money out of his mother. But if she
cant give it to him out o f the house
hold rash or her own pocket she has
a tendency to spoil ali by telling bis
father what she wants'fthe money for.
A girl cannot succeed with her moth
er very often, but she docs not fail
with the old man. And she's' al
ways more ingenious in inventing
necessities for it. A girl, with all ihe
the more reasonable excuse, witlpall
the more limited knowledged needs
of womankind for money, will find at
thno a more reasonable excuse for re
quiring it than a man with innumera
ble natural wants. God bless the
sinter, anyway. Anyone of them is
worth a whole, family of brother.<, —
