The ball room is about fisted up. In
finish, style,-and neatness, it will equal
that *of nra-iy cities. As to these par

tho parties who head the enterprise
Ne question, it is a stylish and attrac

One thing is well to mention: rumors
havefoeen afloat that a more or less
amount of intozication wiil be attendant
upon every ball occasion. Iu reference
to this, the managers gives assurance

Do Ath! The Tomb! Then What?
G orge D. Plenties once wrote: -‘lt
cannot be that the earth ta man’s
abiding place. It cannot be that
life is a mere bubble, cast op to eter
nity to fleat a moment on its waves
and then sink into n itliingness. Else
why is it that the giorious aspirations
which leap like angels horn the temple
o! our hearts are forever wandering
unsatisfied? Why is it that all the
stars that bold their festival around
the midnight throne, are set above the
grasp of our limited faculties forever
mocking us with their unapproacha
ble glory? And, finally, why is it
that the forms of human beauty pre
sented to our view are taken from us,
leaving the thousand streams of our
affections to flow back in Alpine tor
rents upon our hearts? There is a
realm where the rainbow never fades;
where the stars will be spread out be
fore us like islands that slumber in
the ocean; and when the beings which
now pass before us like shadows will
stay in our presence forever.”

Tom Wooltoik Trloci and Ccvictcd.
The trial of Tom Wool folk, for the
murder of his father and family, ended
at Macon last Friday. The jury return
ed a verdict of guilty in about fifteen
mvmtles after the charge was delivered
and leaving the room, and the court,
sentenced him to l b" hr.ng the 10th of
next February, Jits trial consumed
eleven days. As to the court and jury
and opposing counsels, be had as fair
and exhaustive a trial as ever was given
to any one criminally charged. One
thing occurred during the trial that
was not in justice to the eriiuimu.
One’s real convictions as to the guilt of
a man crironally charged is
influenced by public prejudice pr opin
ion. When the consel lor the prosecu
tion Was making his argument, cries
,of “hang him” would corue from the
audience and at times so general arid
loud that the court Was Compelled to
suppress it. The evidence was entirely
circumstantial, which must wlwavs be
regarded as uncertain. Notice of appeal
lias been riled, which'oaenot ire he mi
before •January, and it leaves the case
uncertain as to the result. With the
people, the ycrdict is wholly satisfacto
ry. But the public mind is always
clamorous for the blood or life of any
one charged with such crimes, without
proper regard to'any other' -hypPlehsis
against the weight of testimony. Wool
folk denied the j charge 3 from begffing
to the end. He protested the verdict
in the strongest terms when'called' by
the Judge to rise and receive his sojit
enso. He was taken to the Atlanta
jail until the final disposition of the
case, ora new hearingygranfed.
