evening,, vibe a auo of ohl man
Smith's flo| -eas'd spotted hogs
oorae nosing around picking up
the sumps* startl'd a new train of
thought.
George Murray having had pret
ty hard tussles since ho came back
from Texas, after watching the
hog for a while, remarked: “I
wojnha if that hog over had a good
time in fife, or struck a boom.”
“Hogs alius have good times,
t guess, ’* remarked Basil who had
quit work to see the boom.
£ *l doubt it,” said Murray. “He
must feel Isis degraded position
in life and cannot be happy. I
wish that i could do something to
boom him—"to make him feel that
life is worth living.”
“First man I oversaw who } itied
a hog ” said F. M. S.
“Yes, [ do pity him,” said Mur
ray. “i ve been down myself, and
know how it is. Pug have you col
any brandied peaches”
“Mighty little* if any Squire
Bible and S. M. have eat most of
them. I guess I have g t two
cans of the peaches that have been
in brandy.”
1 will give you a half d d’ar for
them, I am going to make): fa! hoy
happy for once in his life,”
Shug got the peaches ami poured
them out to the hog. They were
davourad with astonishing avidity,
and the hog looked at us and hung
.ered for more. Several of undoubt
ed if the peaches would affect him,
but after a short time he began to
frisk and play, lie down and roll
over, and was evidently under the
influence.
‘Mia, ha, that does m * good,
laughed Muirsy. “He is bosoming
light-bear feed now, and life will
. .ke ; new charm for him. Hang
a»_ o. who- wouldn’t givd a hog a
show.”
Just then the hog uttered a coarse
grunt and made for the crowd.
Squire Bibles being a little slow the
hog struck him on the other-side
and knocked him heels over head
off of ’« noj'tvh and eater*
Welch’s store, took two or three
turns, demolislJ^Rt,-as he went si
out of the door. Jack Chadwick
was coming to- the bo.,
and the hog- charged
him and throwed him across the
rack. 4fie- then beaded
for Mwdy’s sewing machine bug
gy, anWpony, (the pony is a (.raid of
hogs anyway, he struck the hind
legs of the pony, and if Moseley
has found all of his buggy and po
ny yet, ask him. He then beaded
for Bud ITartlines moole-y uteevs
and upset them, aud Woke off the
gee steer's born. An old colored
woman was coining along with a
basket of eggs and salad and, the
bog simply rolled her out of the
road and if an engine bad struck
her she could not have been more
surprised and disgusted, as it were.
He then charged George Vluyraj’a
steers and wagon, and started than
in a run to the mountain.
“It’s coming! Tbe> boom's com
ing 1”
All eyes were turned in the di
rection pointed out and saw John i
Harris and R, T. G. Blake with the !
boom sure enough. The hog nude
direct for them and everyone shout
ed : ‘Take care of the boom.’ bnt
the hog gave Harris a sort of a j
side-wipe and landed him upon,a
pile of crossties, struck Blake fair
on the neth.rside, as he turned
his back to run and turned him,!
over the bank on the railroad,
buisted the “boom” to smithereens
and spilled it out on the ground,
and they went out of sight toward
the section houses. Everybody
got dow n on their knees, and be
gan licking up the “boom.” They
had forgot the hog. All at once
the “boomers” were demoralized.
The hog htd returned again. He
must have thought Squire Bible
and Monroe Mason had jumped his
corner lot in the excitement of the
“boom,” for he caught them be-
low the belt wfith a dull thud, made
for the depot, and turned over
Dude White’s baby carriage, hut
luckily there was nothing in it, and
ion Joe up the stove pipe. About
this time.we got a rope around
hi* leg and tied him to a telegraph
pole. Everybody was mad and
leaked around for Murry, but he
