WHAT KIM> OK TRAINING ‘ THEY WEED, Miseries ofFlglitinK the World Un atmed—How Girls Could be Taught Useful Acts in the High Schools—The City’s Duty in the Case. The practical training for daily life has been limited to boys. We have not considered “ the woman in the case.” Those who, when they have to enter the fight against the world, mr st need skill for some kind of work, so that they may be prserv od from the hardest struggles of life, are least prepared for such emergency. A few months ago, a lady and her little daughter in Atlanta were left without a protector and with nothing to support them. The la dy had to get work of some kind She tried every where, and at last succeeded in securing employment at folding papers at the miserable pittance of $8 a month. Eight dollas a month for a child and her self. But she could do nothing; she had no skill to do anything. Such incidents and dozens may he found in Atlanta, show more eloquently than words the necessi ty of practical training for wttn«m Can such training bo given? 1 1 does not demand a grand technological school like the one that Mississippi has built for her daughters, though that would be best. It can he given, where the peo ple have a right to demand it-—in the girls’ high school. A Journal representative had a talk a few days ago with Mrs. Greene Douglas, who,has had such success in the practical training of a few young ladies at the high school, She had just finished anaching her class of stenography dnd has trained several young la lies to b e skillful shorthand writ*- eis and ready for work with rapid and infallible pencils. “I am. of course, in favor of practical training” said Mrs. Doug las, “I see every day the great necessity For it. and go many of our young girls are entirely hope less, in the strugglo to make a liv ing for themselves, Rud so many of them have to work.” “What would you suggest as the training a girl would most need; and how best to give such train ing?” was asked. “I think that the girls’ high school is the proper place for such training. What one girl would need or want another might not; and I think it would behest to have a training school added as a department of the high school, In it should ke taught stenograyhy. bookkeeping, typewriting wooden graving and desiging for calico prints wall paper, etc,, drawing, dress making in all branches, and telegraphy. These, at least, ought and should he taught Other branches, such as sewing and cook’ ina, might be added. This train ing could be given in the high sochol without much extra expense. “When thp boys school building is added a few rooms could be set aside for a training school.” Mrs. Douglas thinks that the course of study should l>e varied so as to conform to the plan of a training school. The first and sac* ond years course could remain as they are; that is French, Latin, al gebra and one of the sciences. “The 3d and 4th years should in clude the practtcal training. As was arranged, tho tnird year’s course embraces the study of sin gle entry bookkeeping. Mrs. Doug lass thinks that in this year the business course should begin. Lit. erature and Latin could lie alterna-. tivos with stenography and twpe* writing and art or other practical branches. Of course one student would not take the entire business and art courses. Each could take such branches of it a« she thinks most useful to her, and continue the study of literature, French etc. The fourth year should be more exclusively devoted to practical training, if the girl desires to per fect hereself in any of its branches This year would also give alterna tive course of literature, lauguage etc . so that the students coy Id keep up studies in the regular school department. In this course a practical train ing in shorthand, typewriting, art desining, bookkeeping etc,, could be obtained ; one that would fit the girls at LS years of age for the practical adairsof life, and to earn a living if it be necessary. young ladies, if only they had the necessary training. Until this training is given in the girls’ high school, where it can be given, the girls of Atlanta who may have to work for a living will be at a cruel disadvantage, I knowavoung lady now who wants to work, and who needs work, but who can get noth ing to do merely l>ocause she knows nothing of practical work. If she could write short hand, she could get a place today. She has been offered a position to write short hand or keep hooks. Him is helpless. Only the shop or stiching or pasting pape.i or some worlk like this is open to her. Something should he done for the girls, should it not?” It should be done, and at once. It is believed that a simple reso lution offered at tho school board would accomplish what is needed —Atlanta Evening Jonfnal. ”**" Local Legislation. Last Saturday Salem Lea was brought before Mr. Cole on the charge of assisting Jim Holt and others to escape from the convict camps at Rising Fawn, and after an examination was committed t<> jail in default of a S2OO frond. The evidence introduced was more of a circumstantial claims than direct, resulted in proving that Lea had promised to assist tho parties to es cape and that an express package WU3 sent to Salem Lea a short time before the escape. Dr Fricks tes tified that Ipßieiioved he had de livered the package to Salem Lea and that it weighed six pounds. Ward the convict, testified that he, while up norUi, saw and wrote part of m letter in regard to some piw-ls to bo furnished the parties contemplating escape. Beyond this nothing was shown to convict Lea directly with any act of assist ing or aiding the convicts to their escape; one of the parties testify ing that tho pistols were not re ceived from Lea, hut from a fellow convict. All who witnessed tho trial wore surprised that such evi dence could ba sufficient to justify a binding over. An application has been made to the Ordinary for a writ of habes corpus on the ground that the court had no jur isdiction and for either causes. - IF rovn HACK AC UK# Or you arc all worn out, raally good lor nothing it Ik gHiieral nobility.
