1 A Reyolting Crime.
CaafraNooca, Tenn., July 29—
One of the most horrible affairs cv
er chronicled in this state came to
light this morning. Mrs. Buchan
an, a widow lady, and her daughter
Mary, aged 17 years, live five miles
from Spring City. Seteral nights a
¢o geven men, whom ghe recogniz
as neighiborg, came to the house
and made insulting proposals to
the ladies, Being repulsed, the vil
laing forced the miother and daugh-
Lter to accompany them to the
woods, some distance from the
Lfiousu. Thure the ladies were com
pelled to stay all night with the
‘men, who alternately, through the
Jong niglil, ctitraged mother and
daughter. All attempts at outery m'!
escap: werey threatened with in
stant death. In resisting the fiends
the hodies of both ladics were mer
cilessly bruised. At the Break - of
day they wére taken to the river
and forced into a boat, and the
whole party floated down the river
to Smith’s lariding, where the wmo
ther wag taken to the west shore,
two of the men going with her. The
hoat with the daughter and five
‘men was taken to the east side. On
landing the party preeeded to the
vicinity of Birchwood, Bradley
county. whete the girl was kept in

her escape while the men were
sleeping off their drunken stupor.
