WILLIAMSON, ATI. Supt. KUCHA NAN, GEORGIA, THURSDAY FEBRUARY 2(>, 1891. LOCAL ITEMS. Build more houses. Send in your spring ads. There]are no vacant Souses in Buch¬ anan. Mr. W. A. McCalman is quite sick this week. Col. A. I. nead, of Tallapoosa, was here yesterday. There is nothing to hinder Buchanan from growing. Charles rings a new bell at the Loveless Hotel these days. Rev. J. L. Ivy filled his appoint¬ ment here last Sunday. Buchanan will have a building boom this year. Work has already commenced. Messrs. Cantrell & West have formed a copartnership in uniting to their best girls these days Couldn’t a furniture house do a good business in Buchanan? We think so if they would advertise. Mr. G. D. Griffith, our County School Commissioner, is out visiting the schools of the county this week. Col. E.S. Griffith paid Temple, Bremen and Waco all a visit this week. He says that Waco takes his eye. We guess so. The Quarterly meeting of the Haralson County Sunday School Association will be held here next Saturday and Sunday. No couuty lias a more at eir ve set of officers than Haralson county. They are hardly ever away from their posts of duty. How would the pictures of our foreman and that of some of our two hundred and fifty pounders do for an advertis¬ ing cut 2 Dick Young says John Edwards has the best liorse he ever saw—that he knows JUST as well when dinner time comes. Dick is plowing for John, you know. Shell & Co. have bought out the livery stable at Villa Rica and gone into bus¬ iness at that place. Shell & Yancy will still run a stable at this place and at Fel¬ ton. There will he more improvements in Buchanan this year than she has ever had during one year. Six or eight new build¬ ing;! are going up now. Keep your eye on Buchanan. Mr. Will Stewart, of Carrollton, was in town Sunday. Come up Will, and take pictures for us. We have some '‘party” folks and some ugg.’y ones too, but all are clever. Mr. II. C. Head, although badly crip¬ pled up with rhewmatism, is ns punctual in busines# as if there was nothing ailing. It is tlm willingness to work that makes efficient officers. Joe Perkins, the little negro whom Mayor Head set to work on the streets for six days Monday morning for having a light with some larva Sunday, says he will run next time before lighting. ’Squire II. T. Reid brought in the re¬ turns of the stock law election held in the 7th district Saturday. The election re suited in ->7 for and 41 against stock law. making a majority of 10 for slock law. Why do all the successful merchants who have such extensive trades keep ad¬ vertising? Because it pays them. Men who have made fortunes selling goods will tell you that the secret of success lies in printers’ ink, Mr. T. T. Moore says that he might look as young as some other old people if he didn’t have so much hard work to do. Mr. Moore is a haul working, enerjetic man, but that doesn’t hinder him from being one of our best, auci cleverest citi .tens. February seems to be borrowing from March.. The director* of the Alliance Co-oper¬ ative store met hero Tuesday. Marshal Young is pntl ng in some good work on the streets these days. Lookout for Mrs. L. P McKissnck's new ad of spring millinery goods next week. Don’t fail to try a bottle of that South American Nervine Tonic at Neill <k Al mou’s. Some Jipsies passed through town Tuesday and exchanged mules with some of the boys. Mr. Zack Davidson, of Nashville, Tenn., visited his sister, Mrs. C. J- Ju¬ lian, recently. The measles served Mr. J. R. Griffith pretty rough, hut we are glad to note he is much better. Hands are at work to-day try i to re¬ place the Methodist church that was blown from its pillows some weeks.ago. Mr. J. W. Robinson has moved to He occupies the house recently vacated by Mr. J. W. Ogletree. I.At others come. Jake Williams says, tell you if you a good garden hoc that be is ready to make it. Jake makes a good hoe at rea¬ sonable rates. S. L. Hilton A Co, are sole {agents the Tallapoosa Polish Company. They have the polish on hand in the store. Call and see them. Mr. Joe W. Kelley went up to Atla'.va. one day last week. His idea of that place, since returning, is that it is a shade larger than Buchanan. What would please your friend or rela¬ tive, who lives at a distance, more than to send them the Bannicr-Messengb? Then the effect of so doing would not be objectionable to ye editor,, Mr. J. K. Holcomb© had bad luck at his plain r Tuesday. The key fastening the arm to the axle of the fiy wheel came out while the engine was in motion, jerk¬ ing the bed of the engine intwain. Mail trains have been coming in very irregular for several days. Col. Robin¬ son says that it is very important that they should get. in on time in a town no larger than Buchanan, as the excitement runs very high when they happen to be a little behind. Mr. R. E. Loveless has been at work fixing up bis property around town this week. He is putting a new face to some of liis places. Says that be is going to. fix a nice graveled sidewalk in front of bis property connected with the hotel. Let others follow after the pattern of Mr. Loveless, then our town will put on quite » diffident appearance. We find that those who complain the most about their(?) papers being disoon finned are tiio.se who refused to take the My.ssKxtir.i; before the consolidation. Be consistent, friends. If you want thoB.i M nke-Misssungkr we would he glad co send it to you if you will come up and pay for it. Only those who hardly ever think of paying for their papers will grumble at our cash system of doing business, and we can get along a little better with Rome grumbling than to send paperr. to everybody. I am ready to do your wood and iron repairing. Give me a trial. Shop at Groce’s old stand. Respectfully, J. S. Williams. C. J. Julian has moved his office to liis residence in front of Mrs. Young’s house, w j )ero ] )0 w j,j |_ )0 found in and out of sea aon. Feb. Kith, 1331. C. J. J UII AN. THE NEW COURT HOUSE. Judge Davenport tells us that Archi¬ tect Bruce, of Atlanta, will be here Mon¬ day to meet with him and the committee with full plans and specification of the new courthouse. Tlic Judge has a skele¬ ton of the new house in his office which we think to be -on the best plan of any court house in the whole country, and one that will give general satisfaction to the whole people. It is said by the arch¬ itect that such a house will not cost ex¬ ceeding twenty thousand. The Judge and the committee are to be complimen¬ ted for the business like manner in which they have taken hold of this matter. As it has been decreed that we shall have a new court bouse, they propose to see that the work is not posponed and tiiat the house shall be one of credit and in keep¬ ing with the progressive strides of the county. The house will be about feet with six office rooms, two f.re proof vaults, closets, etc., on first floor, court and jury rooms, with all modern im provements on second floor. Mr. tian, of Tallap oi.sa,Ga., officiating. Mr. Watson is a young gentleman good moral character arm! fine qualifications, and lias accumulated a nice fortune. He owns a large store Tallapoosa, one at Waco and one at point. Mr. W. lias tipped the bourn over fifty thousand dollars. lie is brother, to Hon. J. P. Watson and brothers and sisters, and a brother James A. Watson, of Litbia Springs. Miss Mason is one of the brightest and most charming Indies of Brandon, Ga., and is to be congratulated'., in the sclec tion she has made for her life trtN.e panion. Walton and W. F. Lasso ter, TIMBER 5. T1SK COLONEL II %* a WORD. Editor Bannkr-Meshknuicr:—I see that Tallapoosa is trying to get the C., A C. people to build a branch road from sonic point above Buchanan 'to that place, and the statement was published in a paper in Tallapoosa that tlm road was not paying expenses from Cedar town to Carrollton. The writer is laboring under a heavy misapprehension or he has allowed his zeal to get the better part of liis judgement. IC is a well known and conceded fact now, that Carrollton is'the best point and most progressive town in Georgia. Her cotton receipts for tlicsea sor. just passed exceed 20,000 bales; two thirds vif this amount or 14,0tX) bales arc shipped north over tlieC., If. & C. What has Tallapoosa to equal this?' Through her portals . hud reds of car loads of wes¬ tern and northern commerce are pouring over tlie C., R. & C. to the South Allan-, tic Sea bond* Carrollton does an annual business of two and one quarter millions of dollars; one-third or more of this vast volume corofes over the C., R. & C, business is greater than that of Tflllaport-. sa and Cedartown eontblaed, and com¬ mencing at Cedartown and going south to Maudevillo the vast, forests of pine being laid waste and millions of foet of lumber are being hauled over this road, ft averages front seven to eight dollars per car and an engineer told mo that lie often rolled into® Cedartown with.from twenty k> thirty ears of loaded lumber. Say 20 car loads at $10 per car.'3 00 per trip, and that is a daily occurence. I don’t think.the Tallapoosa, writer Iras in¬ vestigated the matter, or he would not have made such a bold assertion. We don’t car.e if. Tallapoosa, gets a dozen roads, but we don’t want her to do if at Buchanan’s disadvantage and misrepre¬ sentation of facts. Buchanan is steadily growing and w nuV — 1 ,: is an assured fact now, we willTiave some fine brick blocks built. She is the coun¬ ty town and is obliged to always be a bu¬ siness center. Now , if Tallapoosa will co-operate with ,us and build the load from Tallapoosa here, we wont object, but we do object to being cut off with a road from Cebartown, but we are cross¬ ing bridges before we get to them, I hardly think we need have any fears. C. J. JlUXAN, NOTICE. Whereas, G. L. Suggs holds, three one hundred dollar notes against me, given to G. L. Suggs and J. B. Eptrekin Decem¬ ber the 9th, 1890, I warn all persons not to trade for said notes, for I will not pay the same, as the consideration for which they were gi ven is null and void. This February the Kith, 1891. J. 11. Reid. HLACKSM1THING, I respectfully call the attention of the farmers and the public generally to the fact that i am now ready to do any and all kinds of blacksmithiiig.
