IN A COFFEE POT.
A SIXTKIIN-YEAK-OLD I50T MADE
WHISKY.
He I» Arrested a year Afterward*—-Tried
anil Placed In Jail—Released ou Bond
and Dost In Atlanta.
Jasper Marion Monroe is the name of
a sixtecn-yeai**dd country boy, as green
and gawky as could be found in the
state.
Yet he has a face that show s that stur¬
dy, honesty and truth of Georgia’s sons
of soil—those who arc known as Georgia's
crackers.
His story is interesting, and the story
is tine to United .States employes.
Yesterday morning ho was in jail. Yes¬
terday afternoon he was free, but lost in
Atlanta, .. without ... , a cent , in . his-pocket, , . . , a
friend in the city or an idea ...... m his head. .
'
,,, today, , thanks ,, , to . a kind , . , and , generous
people, , he will be at Ins homo. ,
,, lle lives with ... , ins . parents , twelve , miles
from . Tallapoosa. ,, II, inlay , , he was u.trcs
ted by a revenue officer for illicit dislill
j n „.
i it was charged that just one year ago
| the boy made some whisky in a ten cof
! jee pot. lie was brought to Atlanta
jTu.sday and tried on the charge. He
was found guilty and bound over under
a one hundred dollar bond. lie was car
ried to jail, the papers were sent to Tal
lapoos, signed and returned yesterday.
The boy was released at 8 o’clock yesier
j day afternoon, after having been in jail
i just twenty-four hours.
He hadn't a cent, and didn’t know

a country boy, never before in a city, and
without the slightest idea of what steps
to take to get home.
He found Jiis way to the police station.
Be remained there all the afternoon, and
just after night some of the officers be¬
gan talking to him. In a simply, straight¬
forward manner, lie told bis story. Be¬
side that of the arrest and trial lie ans¬
wered many questions put to him, talking
in regular country dialect.
Here is the substance of what he said: I
A year ago lie took a small tin coffee
pot and made a little whiskey for him
self—not enough to “do any good.” lie
nothing of it and hoard nothing
of it until Monday, when he was arrested,
the only charge being that he made a lit
tie whisky in a cofh e pot a year before.
This he admitted to the officer and to
the judge at the trial. He wouldn’t lie
about it, but lie says the officer did.
“He swore that he seen me chunk up
the fire and put the beer in the coffee
pot,” said he, “and% know nobody seen
me. The only reason lie knew it was be
cause I didn’t think they could arrest
me for that, and didn’t make no bones
of saying that I made some whisky in a
coffeepot. I reckon lie beam me say so,
and then lie arrested me and come up
here and swore he seed me.”
The boy talked freely, answering all
questions, and telling of liis life. He
hadn’t a cent to get supper with, and al¬
though free, was in almost as bad a fix as
if locked up.
As lie talked quite a.group gathered
around him. Finally, one said: “Let’s
pay his way home.” Every one was
touched by the story, and in a few min¬
utes the boy was given money to buy bis
ticket. He was told to go to the carshed,
a distance of one hundred yards, and buy
his ticket.
“I’m sheered I’ll get lost,” was his re
ply
He was taken in charge, and piloted to
the depot. He was carried into Durand’s
restaurant, and Mr. C. C. Kernodle, the
manager., hearing the story, sat the boy
down and told him to order what he
pleased.
He didn’t know what he wanted, but
ho soon had a big pile of dishes before
him.
To watch him cat was a delight to the
spectators, and the way the supper disap
