There was quite a sensatioYi at the
Methodist college, LaGrange, Saturday
afternoon. As Miss Lillian Smith was
passing from one recitation room to an¬
other she passed out the back door and
on to the gate, where she was greeted by
a fond suitor. As she entered a waiting
caariage the college senior bade adieu to
the hardships that attended college life.
Mr. H. B. Joiuer, on his way to town
last Friday morning, made a most ghast
ly find in the discovery of the murdered
body of a stranger, a white man, supposed
to bo a tramp, two and a half miles north
of Milieu, Ga., about 300 yards from the
Central railroad. From the condition of
the body, he was murdered several days
ago, by being beaten and choked. He
was devoid of all clothing except a coat
turned inside out, with an old pair of
suspenders and a leather strap tightly
fastened about his neck. There is no
clew to his identity or the perpetrators.
Signs of a camping paity were near by.

The little town of Leesburg was invad¬
ed last niglit by a mob of about one hun¬
dred met), coming from Dougherty, Sum¬
ter, Dooley, Worth and Lee counties.
They were after the parties who corn
mitted the criminal assault on Mrs. Ma
voney, an estimable lady of Lee county,
some weeks ago, aud who were in jail at
Leesburg, having been arrested and
placed there by the sheriff at different
times during last week. There were five
men in jail accused of having a hand in
the assault, but the mob only wanted
three—George Fort, George Bivvms and
Bill Holt. George Bi wins admitted com*
mitting the deed himself, and’ said that
lie was assisted bv Bill Holt and George
Fort, all of whom were hung up to a tiee.
The trouble that has been brewing for
some time between Col. David G. Colson
and Eirst Lieutenant E. D. Scott, of the
Fourth Kentucky, culminated at a late
hour last Saturday uight in a pitched
battle, at Anniston, in which Col. Colson
was slrit in the hip and Lieutenant Scott
and many others baa narrow escapes.
The encounter occurred in the Mammoth
restaurant conducted by Percy Olmstead,
about midnight. Lieutenant, Scott was
sitting at a table eating with a friend^
Lieutenant Blakeman, of the sumo regi¬
ment, when Colonel Colson entered. Ho
-walked over near the two men at the ta¬
ble and after looking at them a few
seconds, stepped up and pulled Lieuten¬
ant Blakeman’s ear, at the same time ap¬
plying a vile epithet. Lieutenant Scott
declared that Lieutenant Blakeman was
his friend and he would notallow him to
be insulted. At this Colonel Colson
drew a pistol and Lieutenant Scott rose
from his chair with a pistol in each band.

All the material facts in what promises
to be an interesting murder mystery were
developed at Nashville, Monday because
of the bungling stupid efforts of the mur¬
derer to conceal his crime. The warm
body of ati almost nude young woman
was found in Hyde’s ferry bridge, four
miles down the river, after midnight by
the bridge watchman, who had come out
to salt the bridge winch was covered
with sleet. A young man, driving
open buggy, had left the bridge as the
watchman appeared. The man had been
in the bridge over an hour tieing ropes
around the body with tlie evident

Yesterday was one of intense excite¬
ment in Augusta, caused by the murder
of Private Dennis O’Connell, company F,
Fifteenth Minnesota regiment, United
States volunteers, by Mr. Brown Hadley
Saturday night, resulting in a semi-riot
of that regiment.
Hadley was arrested last night at
Wheeler’s, aud sent to the Fulton county I
jail for safe-keeping.
O’Connell was killed about 0 o'clock
Saturday evening, and as soon as the
news readied the Minnesota regiment
camp two companies broke camp aud
made a dash fdr the city, swearing to *
avenge their pomrade’s death. They
were caught, however, and forced to re¬
turn, and the night was spent, free from
alarm. Upon awaking, however, yester¬
day morning about 100 Minnesota men
made up their minds to avenge O’Connel’s
death, and set about to accomplish their
purpose. They made a break ou the ord¬
nance stores and captured 1,000 rounds of
ammunition and broke for the city. The
Third cavalry was ordered out, and had
it not been for their quick work, together
with the excellent work of the provost
guard, no doubt some trouble w mid have
resulted, although t* e murderer (Hadley)
was not about the city.
Habersham Stiles, son of Dr. C. A
Stiles, of Atlanta, an invalid and phys¬
ical wreck from suffering and nervous
prostration, was burned to death this
morning atfoclock in a little, two-room
shanty on Woodwar 1 avenue, between
Martin ailti King streets. The firemen
who responded to the alarm found the
charred and blackened body on the floor
of tie front room. The man died a Ion i
aud helpless, where for a week he had
lain bedridden and iu an almost dying
condition.
