M. K. Whatley, dmnocrat, and
M. W. Whatley’,populist, brothers,
are candidates for probate judge
of Clay county Alabama.
Judge Atkinson made a very
creditable race, But it was noth*
ing like what it would have been
had his name been Jinks or Hobbs.
A Gatling gun has been added
to tlie armament of the San Fran¬

Rape Circular Atkinson is mad
again. He spent several days in
Washington recently trying to get
the republican administration to
make him brigadier general. The
scheme didn't work worth a 'cent.

ORGANIZE FOR THE FRAY! •
Sir Edward Bulwer Litton Bart j
says in his fascinating book, The i
Last Dav» of Poiwpeii: “The Nnz- vig-j 1
arcno wn» one of those hardy,
orouH and enthusiastic men, fay j
whom God in all times has worked
the revolutions of earth, find those, j
above all, in tho establishment .incl
in the reformation of His own re-
ligion—men who were formed to
endure. It is men of I his mold
whom nothing discourages, noth
ing dismays; in tho terror of be-
lief they are inspired and they in-
spire. Their reason first kindles
their passion, but the passion is
the instrument they use; the\
force themselves into men’s hearts,
while thoy appear only to appeal
to their judgment. Nothing is so
contagious as enthusiasm; it is the
real allegory of the tale of Orpheus
—-it moves stones, it charmes
brutes. Enthusiasm is the genius
of sincerity, and truth accom¬
plishes no victories without it.”
And Litton is right. Enthusiasm
can do anything. It controls pub¬
lic opinion; it makes and mars
mankind. We aro often censured
for being too progressive, too en¬
thusiastic, too fearless in our ad¬
vocacy of what we think is right.
We think such censure is ill-advis¬
ed, There is nothing that can so
immortalize a cause than the fresh,
manly enthusiasm of brave, true
hearts, burning with an anxious
zeal to carry to victory the cause
they hold near and dear to their
hearts. Nothing can bo done with¬
out enthusiasm. Never was a true
heart won by any lover until he
had kindled in tlie heart of 1 )is
lady-love the grandest of all things
love—kindled it there by enthusi¬
asm. All love is kin to enthusi¬
asm. A cold, careless, heartless
man “never won a fair lady.” We
love too see people put vim and
life and enthusiasm in everything
they do. The best speakers and
writers and singers of today are
the most enthusiastic speakers and
and singers. There ought
to be a law against dead people
walking nbo*ut troubling live peo¬
ple. The cause that can’t be made
is a dead cause and
should bn buried. It wearies us to
see orators and writers always orat¬
ing and writing about things and
themes that are as dead as Caesar
tho tariff question. It is easy
t 0 be enthusiastic over a righteous}
cause. It is easy to be eloquent
when pleading fur justice. ’Elion
it behooves every true patriot now
—in 18l»8—to leave the obi ruts of
formalism and come forth and
fight in the army of tho reformers
—tight valiantly, enthusiastically."
Here is our only hope jot' ultimate
victory. We’ve got to organize
and put life in our cause. We’ve
got to enthuse our neighbors and
awaken the dormant consciences
to the duty of the lour. And this
can’t be done by sitting in the
shad, «nd crying, “go slmv Look
forth . bwalM , r The time
is hero for action. The world de-
r.lands enthusiastic hearts and
hands to carry the banners of jus¬
tice to victory.
W r e appeal to every lover of Ub-
ert} tO Ol ganize and be leady for
the battle of ballots this fall. Ours
is a just cause, and we can win if
the people will only awake to their
