The Medical Students’ Register
(England), gives statistics showing
that wild rush by young men into the
medical profession is to be moderated.
In the year 1897 the medical students
registered in England, Scotland and
Ireland were 1,542. There was a de¬
crease as compared with 1895 by 97.
We must go back twenty-one years, to
1870, for so low a registration number
as that recorded last year. The num¬
bers have been several times over 2,000
as in 1879, 1880, 1881,1889, and in 1891,
when they reached the appalling num¬
ber of 2,405. “We cannot affect to re¬
gret the signs of arrest in this rush
into the profession,” commends the
■London Lancet. “Medicine is not im¬
proved by crowds competing for a live¬
lihood.”
The property owned by the fraterni¬
ties at Cornell is valued at $475,000;
At Williams, $350,000; Yale, $300,000;
Amherst, $200,000; Wesleyan, $125,000;
Harvard, $125,000.
# “I DO MY OWN WORK”

Letter to Mrs. Pinkham.
“ I was bothered with a flow which
would be quite annoying at times, and
at others would almost stop.

Finally, in
despair, I
gave up my doc-
tor, and began >
taking your medi¬
cine, and have certainly been greatly
benefited by its use.
“Lydia E. Pink ham's Vegetable Com¬
pound has indeed been a friend to me.
“ I am now able to do my own work,
thanks to you r wonderful medicine. I
was as near death I believe as I could
be, so weak that my pulse scarcely beat
and my heart had almost given out. I
could not have stood it one week more,
I am sure. I never thought I would
be so grateful to any medicine.
“ I shall use my influence with any
one suffering as I did, to have them
use Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable
Compound.”

her condition should secure the sympa¬

A prominent business man reoently ex-
pressed the opinion that there is one thing
that will prevent women from completely
Oiling man’s place In the business world—
they can’t be depended upon because they
are slok too often. This is refuted by Mrs.
C. W. Mansfield, u business woman of 68
Farrar St., Detroit, Mich., who says:
‘‘A complication of female ailments kept
me awake nights and wore me out. I could
get no relief from medicine and hope was

several other people to my knowledge. I
think that If you should ask any of the drug¬
gists of Detroit, who are the best buyers of
Dr. Williams’Pink Pills they would suy the

Testing Children's Eyeg.
An examination of some twenty-five
elementary schools in London was
made recently by the authorities, 8,125
children being subjected to certain
simple tests of vision, and of these it
turned out that just under 40 per cent,
were possessed of normal vision in
both eyes, and between two thousand
and three thousand of those of defec¬
tive vision were most carefully exam¬
ined. The basis governing such ex¬
amination was the combination pre¬
sented to the eye of refracting agen¬
cies, the lens, cornea, etc., which focus
the visible rays of light upon the re¬
tina—a nervous, sensitive screen at the
back of the eye, corresponding to the
sensitive plate upon which the photo¬
grapher obtains his negative. In nor¬
mal vision, rays coming from a distant
object are focused exactly upon the
retina, while for near objects the eye
exerts its power of accommodation, by
which the refractive strength of the
lens is increased. The common opti¬
cal defects, all of which result in im¬
paired vision in a lesser or greater de¬
gree, are of three kinds. Thus, in cases
of myopia, or short sight, either the
eyeball is toS long or the refractory
combination is too strong, with the re¬
sult that the image falls, not on the
retina, but some little distance in front
of it; second, in oases of hypermetro-
pia, the eyeball is too short, or the re¬
fractive combination too weak, with
the result that the image is formed be¬
hind the retina; and in cases of astig¬
matism the surface of me cornea is not
truly spherical, the curve of two axes
at right angles to each other being dif¬

Six Months Without Pood.
John Babcock, an old resident of
Galien, Mich., is dead, after a fast
which probably breaks all records. He
had not tasted food since October last.
Mr. Babcock was in a runaway acci¬
dent a year ago and received injuries
which affected his head. In October
he became worse, and for some reason
which the doctors cannot explain he
could not eat a mouthful of food. Every
effort was made to give him nourish¬
ment, hut in vain, and finally the medi-
oal men gave up his case as hopeless
and left him to die. He continued to
live, however, week after week, ithout
food, until death came after he had
gone 180 days without a morsel of food
having passed his iips.
About two months ago Mr. Babcock's
skin began to harden and to all ap¬
pearances it was turning to bone. At
his death his body was hard and did
not seem to have had a drop of blood
in it.—Chicago Chronicle.
The University of Chicago expended
