Arabian Nights Up-to-Date.
A story is current of Hassan Pasha,
ihe governor of Salonica, which is some¬
what after the style of the Arabian
Nights up-to-date. Opposite the gov¬
ernor’s house lived a Jewish family, who
were poor but honest. The daughter of
the family is very beautiful, and the
governor fell violently in love with the
maiden, but as he is an old man of about
seventy, all his efforts to attract her
attention were in vain. At last the gov¬
ernor conceived a wonderful plan, and
engaged the girl as governess for his
children at seventy francs a month, but
this did not succeed very well, as he
never saw her alone because she dwelt
in the harem. One day, however, he
found her alone, but she turned on him
and kicked him so furiously that the
old gentleman was curled up and she
fled to her parents. He has been ill ever
since and not been able to leave the
house. On sunny days he used to sit
on a balcony, but, unfortunately, from
there he could see the beautiful maiden
in her house opposite, and the sight of
her only increased his love, and nearly
drove him distracted. At last he has
found a remedy, or rather a means by
which the object of his attentions will
not be always before his eyes, and that
is he has persuaded the municipality to
Salonica to build him a new government
house at a cost of £4,000 in a position
where he cannot see the girl— London

AN IMPRESSION .
“I am very much afraid,” said Miss
Cayenne, “that I am losing my reputa¬
tion as a keen observer and a satirist.”
“What makes you think so?”
“Several people yesterday said they
were glad to see me as if they really
meant it.’”
A PECUNIARY FATIGUE.
"Don’t forget,” said the willing work¬
er, “that money talks.”
"Yes,” answered Senator Sorghum, a
little glumly, “but I can’t help wishing
that you boys would select another pho¬
tograph occasionally.”
It is much to be hoped that the re¬
action and depression in Buffalo after
the big fair will not be so serious and
lasting as they were in Philadelphia and
Chicago, in Paris and Vienna. But the
high tides of great expositions are al¬
most invariably followed by a sea of
troubles.

There ia more Catarrh in this section of the
country than all other diseases put together,
and until the last few years was supposed to be
incurable. For a great many years doctora
pronounced it a local disease and prescribed
local remedies, and by constantly failing to
cure with local treatment, pronounced catarrh to it bo in¬
curable. Science has proven a
constitutional disease and therefore requires
constitutional treatment. Hall’s Catarrh Cure,
manufactured by F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo,
Ohio, is the only constitutional cure on the
market. It is taken internally in doses from
10 drops to a teaspoonful. It acts directly on
the blood and mucous surfaces of the system.
