Havana , via Key West, March 9.—The last link in the chain ot circumstantial evidence prov ing that the Maine did not explode through any accident on board has been forged by divers. The volunteers have been protest ing for some time against the overtures being made by the an ti nomists to the patriots. In Havana alone the latter number 14,000, while there are but 8000 regular Spanish sol diers in the city and many of these sympathize with ft e volun teers. Spain would really have two civil wars on hand instead of one. IN CHURCH An Aged Woman Robbed at Evansville, Ind. Evansville, Ind. March 9. Mjs. Elizabeth Huff, 70, was robbed of $865 while attending services at the Trinity Catholic church 'ast night. The woman’s pocket was pich*d after the collection had been taken, presumably by a woman. The navy department wired Commodore Farquhar, Cera mandant of the Norfolk navy I yards, in Portsmouth, that the cruiser Newark must be ready for Sea duty in 60 days. Yard officials protested that 60 days was insufficient, but they were instructed to make a requisition for everything essential to com pleting the work in that time. A large force of hands is en gaged in clearing the bottom of the monitor Puritan, and she is expected to be ready for depart ure this week. About 1600 ’men are at work in the yard, the largest force on the rolls since 1894. Work is pushed day and night. Enlistment goes on rapidly, negroes and foreign born being rejected. Among the recruits to day are Robert W. Blair, son of ex-Attorney General Blair ; Sam uel Lackey, law student under bis uncle, Judge Holbrook, and Sidney Moore, a brilliant young lawyer. Torpedoes are being laid at night in the channel between Fortress Monroe and the Rip raps. RIFLES BOUGHT, Ottawa, Ont. , March 9. —All the Snider, Enfield, Peabody and other rifles now in store here have been sold to parties in the United States. The Sniders, still in the possession of the rural corps, will not be called in until some system is devised to allow the storing of the Lee En fields in proper armories. There are also in store at Quebec and Montreal stands of Martini-Hen ry rifles sufficient to arm 50,000 men which have never been in use.
