Now that the Spaniards can’t get Lee to withdraw, will they do any withdrawing? The London Times thinks Spain does not want war, but says if she does there is no doubt she can be accommodated. Senator Chandler says it means the freedom of Cuba, and the war with Spain will last from 15 minutes to three months. The Georgia Cracker Tows: The "one eyed plowboy of pigeon roost” will whip the fight and win the nomination, letters or no letters. Sam Jones is to hit Atlanta about the middle of March. At lanta doubtless needs the medi cine. She is forttunate in being able to get it. They are going to call it the Hustler-Commercial of Rome, but it Mould seem more natural and euphonious to call it the Commercial-Hustler. —Augusta Chronicle. Kin Beung Surh, a young Korean, will be graduated from Roanoke College, Va., in June, and will be the first of his coun trymen to take the degree of Bachelor of Arts in America and probably in the world. ■ 11 ms? Give us a governor who is a business mm, and will conduct the affrirs of the state on busi ness like principles, a man who has some spirit of enterprise, and will encourage industries in the state. We have enough un developed resources in our coun ty to make it one of the wealth iest in the state. This dormant is practically inexhaust- Give us a governor who at least encourage its devel opment. Such a man is Allen D. Candler.-—A mericus Times-Re nn 1 been su that cQaiitan; PATRIOTSAND RENEGADES All patriotic Americans will rejoice at the spectacle of an American congress heartily sup porting an American president in a crisis such as that now ex isting, with war almost hourly growing mere certain. The passage, by a vote to which but three negatives were opposed, of the bill providing for the immediate establishment us two new regiments of artillery may be taken as an indication that Congress is now thoroughly in sympathy with the administra tion’s efforts to place the country on a war footing. This increase of strength in the artillery arms of the service was imperative for the effectual manning of onr coast defenses, Scarcely less imperative is fa vorable action on Congressman Cannon’s bill, appropriating $50,- 000,000 for the national defense, at the discretion of the President The setting aside of this initial war fu.id will enable the President to purchase all available war ships that are possible to be purchas'd, and to take other defensive ac’iony that must takenbefore war actuall begins. In the swift work of prep aring for a war that .may now come at any time| preparations may not wisely be delayed by the necessity of awaiting special Congressional action on each im portant movement or outlay of money. The thing to do is to act first, to place ourselves in condition to meet and crush Spain at the out set. Settlement of the details of such all-important work may come after the work is satisfac torily done. With the disgraceful exception of Reed, Hale, Dingley and Bou telle—all of Maine—it may be taken for granted that President of the United State can now safely count upon a unanimous support from congress and from public sentiment in the effort to place the nation in the best possible con dition for war. This is reassuring and there no cause for alarm in the outlook as now presented. Patriotic Americans will stand fiimly teg« ther until Spain shall have been soundly thrashed, the crime of the Maine avenged and Cuba liberated. And then, in cidentally, they will proceed to remove from posts of American responsibility and honor such unpatriotic tricksters and’ rene gades as the four just mentioned, Reed, Hale, Dingley and B outs He, all of Maine. —St. Louis Republic V • The Savannah News complains that Savannah pumps 6 000 000 of water per day, while Atlanta uses 2,800,000 gallons . But then it requires a lot cf water for wash ing glasses and julep bowls and things. —Macon News. Judge Spencer R. Atkinson has not yet resigned his position as railroad commissioner. The latest advices indicate that the judge will swing on to it with vice like grip until he knows “whether or no” he is going to receive the nomination for gov ernor. The people would advise him to hold on to his job—if he wants any job at all.—Georgia Cracker. The Hon. John James Ingalls, who used to be one of those -vho believed no giod thing could come out of th i Sotnh, seems to have seen the error of his ways He says. “The moat gratifying indication to me is the growth and develop ment of the national spirit in the South. The narrow provincialism of the past has gone. The pointe of the compass are disappearing irom politics, and the state lines are fading from the map. Noth ing is lees designed than war, but if war should come the veterans of Lee and Stonewall Jacks m would strive to surpass the veterans of Giant and Sherman in their devo tion to the honor and glory of the A BYRD’S EYE VIEW. — I was pie >*ed lo meet Sam W W’lkes at the Armstrong hotel' this tnornii g. Sain Wilkes is a South Carolininn by birth, a Georgia Colonel by appointment and an allri und good fellow by every instil ct, eonvic i< n and characteristic. * * Col,Wilkes is a ci' zen of Atlan ta, a member of the Atlanta water hoard, the president of the Fulton Clu ) and one of the best railroad men in the South. • » * I Met him first as a member of Goy. Atkinson’s staff, and, after having been on a number of trips with him, am prepared to state that if he wi'l move to Rome we will elect h>m Mayor, to succeed John J. Seay, two years hence— and, like J< hn J. Seay we will give him a walkover. * • ♦ Col . Sam Wilkes is one of the salt of the earth. He is popular wher ver known. And Sam Wilkes, like everybody in Floyd county, believes that Allen D. Candler will be the next governor of Geor gia. » » « And, speaking of Col. Candler reminds ms that the morning pa per says, editorially: “Col. Candl-r made an address to the club which b*ars his name, in his hrnie town, Gainesville, on 4 hursday night last. In the report of that speech, sent out from Gainesville to the press, occur these words. “ ‘No man who worked for At kinson’s election and did so hon estly, with no impure mo ives ie ■igaiiist me.’ “The converse of this proposi tion is, that those who worked for ’ Atkinson’s election, and ape now agnins Co). Candler, did so dis honestly and with impure mo tives.” * * And etc , A—. Now I have gon* to the trouble to investigate this matter. The language attributed to Col. Cai dl*r, appears in the report of unfriendly papers. 1 was confident when I read the criti cism that the report was not cor ’ red. * * ♦ In other woids, I knew Col. Candler well and I knew he did not use any such language. What he did say was this: “No man who worked for At kinson’s election honestly, with no impure motive is against me on account of that letter.” meaning the Meyerhiirdt betrayed letter This is authentic. Let the peo ple who are so keen to misrepre sent a grand old Democrat hasten to do him justice—if they did not wilfully do him au injustice. « • * I notice that John W. Bal° of the Southern Argus cf this city and Miss Adele Latimer, of Atlan | ts, are to wed soon. *** The ceremony occurs, according i to the wedding invitatioi e, al , 7 30 p. ra. on March 23rd, at the First Christian church in Atlanta Miss Latimer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs J.
