His toast, “Our Country, Home of Democ racy,” was most ably handled by him and he was interrupted I by generous applause. Mr. W. J. Neel responded to “The Young Democracy” and made a splendid ten minutes talk. Mr. Neelis a complete master of English and was at home completely. Mr. C. W. Underwood had ‘ the most popular subject of the evening in “Fitzhugh Lee.” The mention of the name was the signal for a thrilling out burst of applause and at the close I of every eloquent and well rounded period Mr. Underwood was cheered and applauded to the echo. His speech was one of the distincts hits of the evening. . I have never had the pleasure of listening to an after dinner speech from Judge Henry before ’ last night. Jam now prepared to say that I hoye I shall hear many more. Judge Henry’s speech was charming in diction, ( pleasing in construction and elo quent in delivery. As a prophet | he was not without honor in his own country last night. He said that W. J. Bryan would be the j. next president and he was hear- I tily cheered. o o o The last speech was made by Mr. Bryan and like all the rest ,it was pleasing. I have com mented upon his other speeches and it is not necessary to sav . more here. , Taken all in all lam glad Mr. Bryan came t<\ Rome and hope he will come again.
