'Pho condition.capacity, needs and future of the United States navy are questions which are of grave importance. A resume will give the reader a clear con ception. The withdrawal of ships from the reserve and the hurrying forward of those under repair have now put in readiness for any call by far the most power ful modern navy ever under the American &ag. To begin with, there are in North Atlantic and Gulf waters alone 11 armorclads. The battle ship, lowa, of 11,410 tons, with 14 inches of armor on her sides and 15 on her turrets,and mount ing four 12-inch, eight 8 inch and six 4-inch guns, with 28 smaller pieces, heads the list in size. TWO BIG BATTLE-SHIPS. Next come tb.e still more pow erful battle-ships Indiana and the Massachusetts, of 10,288 tons, 18-inch armor on the sides and 17-inch on the barbettes, carrying four 13-inch, eight 8- inch and four 6-inch guns, with 30 secondary pieces. Then there is the T exas, 6315 ton®, with 12 inch armor on sides and turrets, carrying 2 12-inch and six 6-inch guns, and 24 smaller pieces. Our armed cruisers are the Brooklyn, of 9271 tons and a speed of 21.9 knots, with s|-inch turret and 3-inch side armor, carrying eight 0-inch, 12 5-inch and 20 smaller guns ; and the New York of 8200 tons, 12 knots turret, and 4-inch side armor carrying 6 9-inch, 12 4- inch and 16 smaller guns. AS TO MONITORS. The monitors are the Puritan of 6000 tons, with 14-inch ar mor, carrying four 12 inch, six 4-inch, and 12 smaller guns ;the Amphitrite, the Terror and the Miantomoh, of 3980 tons each, carrying 11| inch barbette or turret armor and an average of 7-inch side armor, with four 10- inch and eight secondary guns, the Amphitrite carrying in ad dition two 4-inch guns. Finally, there is the ram Katahdin, of 2155 tons, carrying four 6-poun ders, but relying on her formid able underwater break as her aggressive weapon. The total is three battleships of the first class and one of the second class, four monitors, two armored cruisers and a ram. UN ARMORED VESSELS . The unarmored vessels in A'lan tic waters include the Columbia and the Minneapolis, of 7375 tons with nine main battery guns, the Cincinnati, 3213 tons, with 11 -'uch guns, the Detroit, Marble-l head and Montgomery, of 2089 tons, the two former carrying nine iui sa id the Montgomeiy 10. The Lancaster, 3250 tons, is wood en, but has a good modern bat tery . The gunboats, including training ships, are the Wilming ton, 1392 tons and eight guns, the Nashville, 1371 tons and eight vims, the Annapolis, Vicksburg an I Newport, 1000 tons and six guns, their sister ship, the Prince ton. which is to be launched this month, the Castine. 1177 to.is and eight guns, the pneumatic gunboat Vesuvians and the dispatch boa's Dolphin, 14SG tons, and Fern. THE TORPEDO FLEET. The Machias, a sister of the Cas'ir.e, is on the way from Fun chal to Norfolk. Work is huriying on the Chicago, 450 G tons, and the Atlanta. 3000. The Torpeco fleet is already noticeable includ ing Ericesson, Por ter, Dupont, Foot Rodgers, Win slow Talbot Gwin M ickenzi ,McKee and Stiletto. In this list are some not. yet in commission but none the less certainly to be counted up on while several others are not far from completion. The foregoing are ships now in North Atlantic and gulf waters. The Pacific squadron includes three iron clads, of which tbe Oregon, a sister of the Indiana, is a first class battleship, while the monitor Monterey, 4084 tons, carries 13 meh barbette and side armor and two 12 inch, two 10 inch and 12 smaller guns, and the Monadnock is a sister of the Amphitrite. The unarmored ship a now in commission include the Baltimore, of 4413 tons, and four 8 inch and six 6 inch main bat'ery guns and the gunboats Benning ton 1710 tons and six 6 inch guns and the W 'eeling and Marietta 1000 tons and six 4 inch guns, IN ASIATIC WATERS. There are also useful old time ships like the Adams, Alert and Mohican, and there are more modern ones under repair. On ’he Asiatic station. Commodore- Dewey has the flagship Olympia of 5870 tons and tour 8-inch, 10 5-incb and 24 smaller guns, the Raleigh, a sister ship of the Cin cinnati the 1 , Boston. of 3000 tons and two 8-inch, six smaller guns the Concord, a sis ter ship of the Bennington, and the petreal, a little gunboat of 892 tons and four G inch and sev en smaller guns, besides the old Monocacy. On the European sta tion are the San Fransisco, 4098 tons and 12 5 inch gnus, the Helena a sister ship of the Wil mington, and the Bancroft, 976 tons and four 4-mch gut s. CRUISING VESSELS The array is not even yet com plete. There must still be added as vailable at dates in the near future the cruisers Charleston 3730 tons and eight main battery guns, the Newark, 4098 tons and 12 guns, the Philadelphia, 4324 tons and 12 guns and the York town a sister ship of the Benning ton. There are also several old style cruising vessels like the Essex and the Alliance, while some powerful navy tugs could be made useful. KEAR3ARGE AND KENTUCKY Such is our available naval force which each day increases by hur rying forward the st ips fitting out !or under repair and the torpedo boats bu'lding. In this resume are nrt included the Kearsargp and the Kentuckey because these battle-ships to be lauehed this month, will still be a long time in completing. But the regular navy could be largely reinforced from the mercantile steam marine. As it stands, however, it is more than a match for Spain’s besides having the incomparable advan tage of a base on the Cuban side of the Atlantic.
