MM LYNCH SIX.
* *•
Much Excitement in Missis
sippi Valley.
MURDER ftND ARSON
Charged to This Half Dozen
Desperadoes.
Memphis,Tenn., March 15.
Unless a sextuple lynching oc
curs in the Mississippi Valley
section of Mississippi within the
next few days, all symptoms
will prove faulty and knowing
ones will be woefully diappoint
ed. Hitherto forecasts of such
events in the region of Memphis
have proven reliable, and the
present one is hardly likely to
go awry.
The probable victims are John
Cotton, his two sons, Norman
and Jessie; Sharkey Logan,
Jos Taylor and Lee Wright, and
their outrageous offenses} in
clude two train wrecks and one
assassination. The latter criint
was committed about three years
ago, a prominent white mer
chant at Deer Creek bein mur
dered, while t'ie train wreckings
have occurred within the past
three weeks, the last one on
Wednesday morning last, on the
Valley Branch of the Illinois
Central.
Clever work by Supt. Sharpe,
of the road, who was aboard the
wrecked train, brought the sus
pected wreckers, nine in num
ber, into custody within a few
hours, and they were first taken
to Leland, Miss. Investigation
exhonorated three of the suspects
and fastened guilt upon six.
From Leland the negroes were
removed to Gieenville, when
they are now held. Fearful tha>
lynchrrs would take a hand ai
Leland, Capt. Sharpe shifted
the quarters of his prisoners
while they were held there,
and he subsequently learned
that his precaution was not ta
ken in vain
The Superintendent is espe
cially pleased at this becausi
had the precaution not been ta
ken three innocent negroes
would have perished. He re
turned from the scene today and
there is little doubt in his mind
that no county will have tobeai
the expense of the negroes’ tri
als.
John Cotton is the leader of
the gang, from which confes
sions have been obtained, and
their ingenious schemes at train
wrecking were planned while
working in fields. Suspicion in
the Valley wreck was attracted
to them by the profane refuse of
a request to build fires in the
Cotton family cabin near the
scene, for the comfort of lady
passengers, and the failure of
the negroes to Hock about the
wreck. Both these incidents
were the reverse of the charac
teristics of the negroes.
