I have been upon the other side
of a certain matter for so long a
time that I have hesitated about
expressing myself as I have
often wanted to. Now that I am

Now look here; yesterday I
wrote some stuff and among other
things «aid, “in an unguarded

“In an unregarded moment I read
it.”

It matters not how sorrowful
have been during the
\vly(sr months just passed ; it
matter's not if we ourselves have
reached the winter of life and
have realized that after all the
griefs weigh heavier than the
joys of our alotted portion, the
coming of spring is bound to
bring with it a sense of exhilara
tion that no physical or mental
discomfort can down.
We go forth in the morning
disheartened and discouraged.
We dread the coming hours of
the day ; thev may have a joy in
store for us, but more probably
there is a worriment rather than
peace.
000
Yet as we pass the man at the
corner with his tray of fragrance
breathing jonquils we become
for the moment drunk with the
essence of springtime and the
troubles grow misty—in fact, we
don’t believe in them at all.
They are fancies, not realities,
and we invest in a cluster of the
sunshiny blooms and trip along
with the crowd as light hearted
as any member of it.
How blue aie the skies, how
well every one looks, how happy
we feel; the magic of springtime
is in our viens and the shadow
of pastor future trouble has not
the power to quench the bright
ness of our thoughts, but by and
by the flowers fade, a little chill
wind with a suggestion of win
ter in its breath creeps up from
the east, the sun lurks under a
cloud and our mind is brought
back to the realities of life with
a sudden shock, There are trou
bles in the world after all, but
we have enjoyed the touch of
springtime even if autumn and
winter are close upon us.
000
Feeling thus, hoiv can we
censure those who in the spring
time of life act like the lambs
and kittens that they are in very
truth, for to them there is no
thought of chilling winds that
all too soon will blow their rose
colored dreams to atoms that
can never be gathered together
again in the building ot those
castles in the air that are the
property of youth and of hope,

A cat may look at the king,
but there the license stops. It is
not permissible in the
face of loyalty. The gentlemen
of the Philadelphia Produce Ex
change, who, with their ladies,
recently enjoyed a pleasant ex
cursion to Washington, are no
exceptions to this rule, which
seems to apply to all royal per
sonages, regardless of color.
Ex-Queen Liliuokalani of
Hawaii still considers herself a
royal personage, and she main
tains a small court about her in
her apartments in the Ebbitt
House, at Washington, Every
evening after dinner she repairs
to the public parlor of the hotel,
and holds informal receptions.
She is glad to meet all, especial
ly American gentlemen, who
care to shake hands with her
and chat ab >ut her country.
000
Among those of the Produce
Exchange party who took the
opportunity of meeting her last
week were James I). Ferguson,
president of the Exchange, and
several ladies of his party. They
chatted with the ex-Queen for a
few minutes, and then moved
off' to a distaat corner of the
parlor, and soon after forgot all
about her. They were talking
over one of the amusing events
of the day. the recollection of
which prompted the ladies to
laugh very heartily. Instantly
the ex-Queen’s dusky secretary
stalked across the lloor, and,
scrowling upon the par tv, de
manded: “What for you laugh
at my Queen?” The ladies were
astounded. “You’re mistaken,”
said Mr. Ferguson ; “we were
not laughing at your Queen.”
“Yes; you laugh at my Queen.”
persisted the secretary. The
Queen herself looked very an
gry. Mr. Ferguson and his par
ty left the room, and then they
did laugh at the Queen and her
henchman.”
What is
Scott’s
Emulsion?
It is a strengthening food and
tonic, remarkable in its flesh-form
ing properties. It contains Cod-
Liver Oil emulsified or partially
digested, combined with the well
known and highly prized Hypo
phosphites of Lime and Soda, so
that their potency is materially
increased.
What Will It Do?
It will arrest loss of flesh and
restore to a normal condition the
infant, the child and the adult. It
will enrich the blood of the anemic;
will stop the cough, heal the irrita
tion of the throat and lungs, and
cure incipient consumption. We
make this statement because the
experience of twenty-five years has
proven it in tens of thousands of
Cases. Be sure you get SCOTT'S Emulssou.
