A Proof-Reader.
Editor nusUerComini'icial.
In your edition of last Tues
day, 1 notice among other good
things a well put sarcasm at the
“enterprising proof reader”
from the pen of “The Rounder.”
Now, “The Rounder” is a
jolly good .'ellow, and a man who
believes in fair play and in or
der that the long suffering and
patient public may have both
sides of the question I would
like to make a few remarks in
defense of that much abused and
most patient (?) of public ser
vants, the printer and proof
reader.
In the beginning let me ask
you, gentle reader, did you ever
try to masticate and digest a
horticultural, mineralogical and
ornithological map of Ireland,
drawn with fourteen kinds of ink
and finished in unsharpened
pencil?
Have vou ever undertaken the
solution of a difficult geometrical
problem while the buzz of sev
enteen machine shops was roar
ing in your ears and a “new
story fiend” was following the
lead of his master, His Satanic
Majesty, and bawling his chest
nuts into your unwilling hear
ing.
Did you ever look at things
like this
P' K ■ . ■' J?
-s'! if*'’ 1 -
fife---
until eyes ached and head was
bursting?
Well “this” is socalled “copy,”
sent in by really intelligent and
well meaning people who think
“Oh, it don’t matter, the prin
ter can read it.” and then when
the paper is out and his senti
mental “pretty and sweet” is
translated “putty and sweat” hr
tears his hair and uses —! ! !
But that is his privilege. Tin
printer, unless a lady, has damn
ed him beyond the pale of decen
cy, the foreman and proof read
er have had a scrap and the of
fice boy gone home with the
toothache.
XXX
There is only one more and
lam done. That is the fellow
with whom paper is a luxury
and uses both sides of a sheet,
and then turns it and writes
some along the margin, then
when a certain article is needed
by the make-up, he finds the
printer tearing his hair and
shrieking in his misery as he
asks where the “dadgasted,
measly, dodburned rot ends or
begins.”
Dear Rounder, we have suffer
ed. The writer has his troubles,
but there are others.
In conclusion, allow me to
state that the whole force of the
Hustler-Commercial are ready
to bet their earthly belongings
against a cookie, and let him
bold the stake that “The Roun-
der” could not be induced to sit
down and endure one day’s
straight seige of copy and proof.
Thanking you, I tun
“A Pkoof-beakek.”
ALL FOR CANDLER;
It’s Candler and Cook down
this way, every time. —Vidalia
Star,
Candler’e campaign is in splen
did hand? —the hands of the peo
ple of Georgia.—Lee County Jour
nal.
While we are for Candler for
governor we have nothing to say
against the others. They are
good men but then “Uncle Allen”
Candler is the b«st tran for gover
nor.—Darien Gazette.
Candler is the most popular
candidate among the people of the
towns, but then country peoph
while leaning toward Candler, are
not in any haste about making a
final selection, —Macon County
Citizen.
The sterling integrity and
rugged honesty of Allen Candler
appeals strongly to the masses ol
the people, There is nothing of
the demagogue or trickster about
Candler. Thomasville Timei-
Enterprise.
The candidates for governor
arejtn iking the Welkin ring. Can
dler. Berner and Judge Atkinson
are all delivering stump speeches
in various parts of the state. It
is pay your money and take your
choice. From present indications
Candler is in the lead, —Miller
County Liberal.
Allen D. Candler will be the
next governor of Georgia, for the
editors say so. Sam Jones says
so, the great mass
imously say so. Men may some
times become bewildered with
beauty, but women are captivated
with rugged honesty, and they
find it mtensifiied in Colonel Can
dler.—Jacksonville Herald.
The people of North Georgia
have a great deal of admiration for
Judge Spencer R. Atkinson and
for Ho.i. Robert L. Berner
and we have heard nothing but
kind remarks made about either.
Indeed, it is the general opinion
that eiher gentleman would make
an admirable governor, but th*
people are for Col. Candler al
most to a man, so far as we have
heard. Unless all all all signs fail
he will be the next governor “just
as easy.”.—Pickens County Her

Cancer
01 the Breast.
Mr. A. H. Cr. usby, of 158 Kerr St.,

paid no attention to a small lump which
appeared in her breast, but it soon de
veloped into a < ancer of the worst type,
and notwithstanding the treatment oi
the best physicians, it continued to
spread and grow rapidly, eating two
holes in her breast. The
