ITS A COMBINE. Rllen D. Candler Says That Berner And Atkinson ARE WORKING TOGETHER. Three Reports of Atkinson’s Opening Speech. The selection of an early pri mary was. according to rumor, quite a disappointment to some of the candidates for guberna torial honors. It is claimed that the selection of an early date for holding the primary is entirely too early as the candidates will not have sufficient time to go before the people. Behind this dech ra ion lies a story. In the executive committee meeting several days ago a hard fight was made for a late pri mary by the forces opposed to Col. Candler. Col. Candler, in speaking of the time to hold the primary, said : “It matters not to me if the primary is held in April or September; I am sure of elec tion. “The opposition wanted alate primary, and if you will notice in the committee meeting when the Berner-Atkinson party voted, they voted as one man. They have reached an understanding and know each other as well as I know them.” “All I want is a fair election.’ On February 19th I sent a letter to every member of the commit tee requesting the people to vote direct for the candidate and not for delegates to the convention. “On March 10th, nearly a month after I sent my letter to the members of the convention, I received a letter from Judge Atkinson asking % me to cooper ate with him in securing a fair election. “I replied to his request with the assurance that I would do all in my power to help him se cure fair play, enclosing a copy of the letter I had sent the mem bers of the committee. lam will ing to do anything I can for a fair election.”—Atlanta Com mercial, JUDGE A I KINSON Formally Opens His Campaign In Hawkinsville. I Hawkinsville, March 21. Judge Spencer R. Atkinson opened his campaign here Satur day. He spoke in the court house, which was filled. His speech was a repetition of his formal address, though he wen' more into details. ' His attitude on the exemption of manufactories from taxation met the approval of the town people, but the country people listened to his argument in sil ence. They paid very close ami re spectful attention to what he said, but gave no open demon station as to their feelings on this very important question.—At lanta Commercial. MACON telegraph’s REPORT. In the Macon Telegraph's report of Railroad commissioner Atkin ■on'a opening speech apoears this paragraph : At 11 o’clock a brass band Rd the way, and eight hundred or a thousand people gathered in the courthouse to greet the young candidate. Hon. Sam A. Way, Hawkinsville's handsome young Mayor escorted the speaker to the ths stand and introduced him t< the eudience in a ioliciloua man ner.” (The Hustler Commercial can prove by any man in Hawkins ville that the court room wont accommodate the half that number of people.) constitution’s report In the Constitutions report of this same speech is fouud the fol lowing statements: “ Throughout this portion of his speech it was very noticeable that while be criticised both the «> ppos in g candidates for what he alleged to be their insin cerity in the matter of tax reform he took occasion to pay a hign personal compliment, whenever the opportunity offered, to Sena tor Berner, while he naver failed to refer to Colonel Cand:er as my “my venerable old friend from Hall.” He repeated this expres sion at least half a dozen times.” (And yet, while the rugged o'd Allen D. Candler is only 61 years of age, the Atlanta Journal has published a barefooted war record of the brave stump speaker who challenges for joint debates but who fears to resign his fat job on the railroad commission ) At the close of the railroad commissioners talk, says the Con stitution, “A score or more of people came forward toehake his hand, and be was liberally and honestly congratulated upon the success of his address. Among those who congratulated him was an elderly and influential business man oi Hawkinsville., who said that the speech was one of the best he had heard for a long time. “But, judge,” he added, “I am going to wait until I hear from your venerable old friend from Hall before j make up my mind how to vote,’ gee! BUT AIN’T THEY HOT? All because Frank Wright has put the prices of drugs down. To lower the prices of this line in Rome is like punching a hornets nest, but you stick to me with your cash trade and I’l keep punching and the prices sha.l stay down, Frank Wright, Farinacist, at Norton’s eld corner, opposit Ma sonic Tempi.
