SHE IS PRETTIER Off the Stage Thao She is Before the Footlights. Miss Cora Van Tassell Talks of her Visit to Rome Sev en Years Ago. Cora Van Tassell. Or off the stage, Mrs. William Stewart. Pretty, petite and popular; she is even prettier off the stage than when, like a little electric battery, she thrills and, some times shocks her audience by her innocent little “brakes. ” Yesterday afternoon, after the Hustler-Commercial copy was in and while the rain was pat tering so steadily, a reporter sought Manager Edd Nutt, of the Cora Van Tassell Co., and obtained an interview with his popular little soubrette. Miss Cora Van Tassell on the stage, is known in domestic life as Mrs. Wm. Stewart. She and her husband were found in their elegan tapartments at the Central, reading. They gave the Hustler-Commercial a most hospitable reception and demon strated to his satisfaction among other things, that they are as entertaining off the stage as they are before the footlights. They were well posted on all current events in Georgia and were as ready in a discussion of politics ns of roles in the many attractions they go prepared to put on the stage. And, while Mr. Stewart is a Pennsylvania Republican, and Mrs. Stewart an Ohio Democrat, they were unanimous in their praise of brave old Fitzhugh Fee. Miss Van Tassell is a beauti ful woman, on or off the stage. She talks most entertainingly, and in a vivacious way that is as captivating as it is matchless, and as pleasing as it is individ ual she relates reminiscence, ad venture or narrates travel, al ways holding the listener’s closest attention. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, a few years ago, and at the ago of seven began her life be fore the footlights. She is a niece of Col. 11. E. Van Tassell, who has served for two terms as Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio. “Seven years ago,” she said, “I played ia Rome and while here there was a strike among the stage hands. I had quite forgotten the incident until to day when a gentleman sent me a box of Huyler’s, stating that at that time he was in the strike and that he wanted to sweeten his long delayed expression of thanks for the manner in which I arbitrated the strike and se cured the redress his side was contending for.” , “Rome,” she continued, “has made very many rapid strides since then. 1 remember the city well and while I have been all over the Union since that visit seven years ago, I must say that I returned here with a deal of pleasure —even if the rain and general inclement weather has been so unkind to us.” Just here a small “coonlet” who wanted to eirn a gallery pass, knocked on the door. Mr. Stewart answered the call and tlie little negro stated innocent ly : “Ise cum fer dat box er jokes whut Miss Cory wuz ter sen’ down to de stage carpen ter.” Ho was sent-away, hut in a few minutes came back and said, “dey wants de curtain key, down ter de opry house.” Mr. An eastern contemp >rary refers to the fact that the French liner La Champagne was recently towed into Halifax, “having on hoard three tons of Camembert cheese ir a disabled condition.” o o’ o Prince Albert of Belgium will go west and study the Indian. In pursuing his study, however, he should take care that the study doesn’t pursue him.—New York Mail and Express. o o o Meda A'ilbiie. a 4-year-old girl of Buckner, Ky.. is 4 feet high and weighs 120 pounds. Her chest mersurement is 88 inches, neck, 15. waist. 37, biceps. 12, forearme 11. Her mental development i excellent, and she is in capital health. Neither her father nor mother weighs over 130 pounds. o o o The grave of John Morton, who cast the thirb enth and deciding vote it. favor of the Declaration of Independence, is in an obscure spot in th« old Episcopal grave yare at Chester, Pa. No fitting tombstone marks the spot, and the people of Delaware county are banding together to procure one. o o o The Atlanta Journal having found fault with all the guberna torial candidates the Savannah Morning News suggested that the Journal was hard to pleaes, and asked how the president of the Journal (Hon. Hoke Smith) would suit tor governor. The Jour nal replies that its president has had enough of official life, but if tbs president of the Morning News Col. Ectill. would announce for governor it would give him active support. This Is the retort cour teous. o o o •’ It is said that the great histor ian, Mommsen, was once wander ing along the streets near his home in Berlin when he met a little girl whose face attracted his attention. After chatting with her a few moments, he patted her on the head and asked: “And, now, my little one. who is your father?” “My papa is Herr Professor Theo dore Mommsen,” was the aston i-hing reply. The great historian of Rome had apparently not found time to make the acquain tance of his own children. Stewart enjoyed the joke almost as much as “Miss Cora,” and gave the picaninny a uime and told him to “go over to Jervis Wright’s drug store and get a nickles’ worth of wrinkles—and get them at cut rates and keep the change.” The “koonlet must have “got ’ onto the wrinkle,” for he didn’t 1 return. 1 Four years ago Cora Van Tas ’ sell and William Stewart were 1 married. He has been her lead- ■ ing man ever since, and while 1 they easily support each other ’ as stars in their profession, ei -1 ther could support a family oil the salary either commands. ’ Miss Van Tassell is a strict 1 disciplinarian with her support, and not one of the twelve people I in her company could star if it I did not do first-class work and II do his turns conscientiously. f Iler play “Camille,” on Mon day night was to a good house ’ and was splendidly received be cause it was well put on. Last night in “A Fair Southerner,” r she and all her support did • splendid work, though a contin- I uous rain had cut the hou-e ■ down to about 200. \ r Cora Van Tassell merits the support of any first grade artist ■ —for she is in that class. i j '■ i Lost. —A bunch of keps.
