Rome Will Celebrate April
Twenty-sixth.
HON. W. 8. MCHENRY
Has Boon Selected as the Ora
tor of the Day.
Memorial Day in Rome will
be celebrated on April 26th this
year.
From this point of vantage it
is not easj to predict just how
many Romans may not be in
position to participate.
Usually the military cf the
city is out in full forco. This
year the brave boys may be
serving their country in the coast
fortifications or marching and
fighting with the American Ar
my of Occupation on the blood
stained soil of desolate Cuba.
There may be fresh mounds
in the sacred territory where
sleeps the dust of fallen patriots,
ere the date designated.
The God of Battles only
s knows. While we prepare for
the worst, let us all hope for the
best.
The following card will ex
plain itself.lt is the official com
munication from Mrs. Halsted
Smith, secretary of the Ladies
Memorial Association.
MEMORIAL DAY.
Arrangements are being per
fected to celebrate Memorial
Day on April 26tb. Col. W. S.
McHenry has kindly consented
to be the orator of the occasion.
Full details of the program will
be published in due time. It has
been determined to have the
celebration on the 26th. This
is a legal holiday, and the ser
vices are much more impressive
when the participants can feel
that throughout our whole sun
ny Southland thousands of
hearts are beating in unison in
remembering and revering the
dead heroes of the lost cause.

THE MYSTIC CHAIN.
• I
Lodge Organized Here Thurs
day Night.
LIST OF OFFICERS.
An Order That Will Become
Popular-
Rome Lodge No. 114 of the
Knights of the Mystic Chain was
organized last Thursday night
when the following officers were
elected :
J. W. Hancock, Past Com
mander.
Rev. C. B. Hudgins, Com
mander.
J. F. Wardlaw. Vice Comman
der.
Rev. P. Gilbert, Chaplain.
I. 1. Tracy, Treasurer.
D. E Lowry, Recorder.
C. A. Harper, Marshal.
E. A. Powers, Guard.
11. G. Thompson, Sentry.
J. N. Shaw, M.D., physician.
The Knights of the Mystic
Chain as an especial feature pro
vides a continuous support for
the member at old age and an
annual income for the widow
paid during widowhood, also
supports the children of a de
ceased member until they reach
21 years of age, or the member
can leave an annuity to bis fath
er or mother which yvill be paid
to them so long as they live.
The annuity system of the
Mystic Chain dates back several
hundred years in the oil world,
the first society organized in
England, commencing in the
12th century and is still in active
iperation.
There are only four annuity
societies in the United States
and the Mystic Chain is the only
one in the south. Its plan and
rates will bear the closest inves
tigation.* It is the only system of
life indemnity in America v here
12 members pay a claim, which
is a death rate of 83| per thous
and, and when it is remembered
that the average death rate per
thousand in the United States is
only 15i it can be readily seen
at a glance the system is perpet
ual.
The charter list of the Rome
lodge will be kept open during
the stay in the city of Messrs.
Aikeman and Smith, who will
remain for several weeks yet at
the Central hotel.
Due notice of the next meet
ing of the lodge will be given in
these columns.
