The city sexton reported that during the month of March . • there had been eleven interments in Myrtle Hill cemetery, five whites and six colored. Four of | the whites were non-residents. J The water commission made / an annual report to the council, ;7l showing that they had collected $13712.67 and paid out $13377 - 45, leaving a balance, on hand April Ist, 1898 $335.22. Ordered by the council, that demand be made on the water commission for said sum of $335.22 to be paid to the city council. (Resolved, by the council, that thanks be tendered MayorS. S. Meeting was called to order by Hon. John J. Seay and Coun cilmen, A. B. McArver, D. B. Hamilton, Jr., B. T. Haynes, Walter Harris and T. J. Reese qualified under oath by Mayor John J. Seay. Hon. John J. Seay delivered an inaugural address, and called the new council to order, coun- oilmen present being. F. J. Kane and A. B. McArver from the First ward, W. T, Jones and D. B. Hamilton, Jr., from the Second ward, R. A. Dennv and B. T. Haynes from the Third ward, C. W. Morris and Walter Harris from the Fourth ward J. I) Turner and T. J. Reese from the Fifth Ward. The council then went into a election for officers of the ensu ing term of two years as follows: The salary of the clerk of council was fixed at $1150.00 per annum and Halsted Smith was elected clerk. The city attorney’s salary at S3OO per annum, C. W. Under wood elected ; city treasurer’s salary S3OO per annum, J. Bailey Gordon elected ; city recorder’s salary S3OO per annum, M. B. Eubanks elected ; city marshall’s salary of $75 per month, J. B. Shropshire elected ; deputy mar shal’s salary S6O per m mth, W. Guice elected. A motion was made to elect twelve policemen at a salary of SSO per month, without uniforms end was lost upon the following yea and nay vote : Yeas council men, Denny and Jones, nays Harris, Reese, Kane, Turner, McArver, Hamilton, Haynes and Morris. Upon motion it was resolved to elect twelve policemen for the ensuing term at a salary of SSO per month, and that two uni— ■ forms be furnished the whole 1 police force annually at the ex pense of the city. Ordered that the sum of $250.00 be appropriatiated out of the fui ds on hand as a temporary appropriation of the Cemetery, Street and Salary departments, to pay the weekly pay roll, and the Clerk of Council is authorized, until further orders,to issue drafts weekly for tLe pay rolls of the Cemetery and Street Departments upon approval of Chairman, or acting Chairman of said Commit tees, and te issue the weekly salary draft of the janitor.
