It has the combined circulation of the old evening Hustler of Rome and the Rome Daily Commercial, and is THE OFFICIAL GAZETTE OF The City of Rome ■, The City Marshal 'Die Sheriff of Floyd County 'l'he Ordinary of Floyd Co. The Hustler-Commercial has the confidence of the classes and the masses—because it mer its and deserves the confidence of all its readers. Now is the time to tell your neighbor to quit borrowing and enlist his name as a subscriber. The Constitution has again put the “fair end impartial” Macon Telegraph on the defensive.' While all the war talk ia in progress, Hon. Allen D. Candler is winning votes on every side.— Americus Herald. -' '* / . From the news report* it would aeem that Brunswick and Glynn County are having Some politics— and that the prospects grow darker each day for JAtkinson breaking the record and carrying hie honbe county. « " ■' The June snap is not so popu lar in the Colonel’s own county. —Macon Telegraph. • And yet the Telegraph ia eter nally lecturing its betters about “personal journalism” and claim-' ing to be non-partisan” aud “fair and impartial.” It has algo sworn a mighty oath that this campaign has “got to he fair.” The Marietta fournal told the truth when it said: “Col. Can dler's declining to meet Atkinson and Berner on the stump vindica ted Candpr's judgment.”—Way- C)oss Herald. * v\ The Herald has evidently read Railroad Commissioner A'kinsou’s dirty personal attacks upon Col. B, Stevens will be cur next com missioner of agricu'ture.—Coch ran Telegraph. Wherever A tkinson speaks he is met by small audiences that show their appreciation by their earnest but silent attention. And now what we want to know ia how much Mark Hanna paid Sagasta for writing McKinley’s message?—Atlanta Commeicial. The sixth congressional district has followed in the steps of the seventh in naming June 6th. as the date lor congressional pri maries. ■ The anti Candler organs are writing column editorials attemut ing to explain away the midnight consultation held by Burner and Atkinson in the Macon Te egraph office. The Macon News says that someone suggests that congress turn the excitement to account by charging an admission fee, and thereby make up the Dmgley deficit. A* •- The Augusta Herald one of the “chiefeat of bushwhackers” co i tinnes to have its daily ducktii over the early primary. Bring i.i another “greaser” Sunday and an- Ather Mexican bull-fight! Bob and Spencer hate that exposure business “ever so much.” Poor schemers, they doubtless felt that the security of their secret conference was boundless —having met outside thh deinocr itic plat form. ■ - Judging from surface indicatioi s ahd the volume of t< u ;d coming from all parts of the state, line's ‘Allen Candler is successfully tot ilg bis skillet in the pending cam - paigp.—Thomasville Times Enter prise. * The United States has $175 000,- 000 in gold iu its treasury today, but wfapD.cne civil war broke out there were less than $3,000,000 in the vaults. The con'rast is sug gestive, observes the Waycross Herald. x I. Col. Candler's last letter ro Judge Atkinson was the best letter that has eminated from that gentleman’s pen. It was in strik ing contrast to the bitter persona! attack ot Judge Atkinson.—Lee Couty Journal. Colonel Candler has done anoth er wise thing which will be heart ily endorsed by all the people, viz. He has written Judge Atkinson a letter declining to ’ engage with him in a newspaper controversy . Lycns Courier. The Hall count} local primary is the latest mare’s nest descover ed by the arti-Candleritea. Not being able to find a straw to grasp at thesedrowning politicians grasp at the Shadow of the straw which shows the way the wind is blow ings . • Decidedly the warmest political document that has made its ap pearance was that furnished the press by Colonel Allen Candler and directed to Judge Atkinson. It .was sixsling with beat from beginning to end and created much comment in Conyers, where nearly every one talks for the “Pl'owboy. ” —Conyers Weekly. Col Candler was a railroad president years ago and though he resigned soon after Editor Gless ner rtioved south from Ohio, the incident had not beau discovered by that enterprising news gatherer —whence the Griffin news contin ues to ailude to Georgia’s next Governor, the plow boy of Pigeon Roost as a railroad presi dent. The News, however, has let up on its sarcastic remarks about ith* old veteran’s one eye. '1 he New York Sun says: “Fitzhugh Lee returns from his long and difficult experiences at Havana to find that the whole nation honors and loves him. Few public servants have been more promptly rewarded for distinguished serviced. Not long ago he was the favorite Json of Old Virginia. Now he is a favorite son oj Old Glory.” o o o 'l'he Savannah Press says: “The Candler papers insist that joint debates between Colonel Candler and Judge Atkinson would “hurt the party.” But they are crazy to have Judge Atkinson and Mr. Berner “get together on the stump,” Why is this?” Because Berner and Atkinson are so clamorous for a joint discussion, themselves. They are so anxious for a joint debate that in pity for their anxiety they should be let loose - Atlanta Commercial. coo 'l’he Lawrenceville News says Col. Candler was expected to answer Spencer Atkinsons’ letter at, Rome, but didn’t. What tommyrot' Col. CRndler didn’t get Spencer’s letter until Mon day, three days after it was printed, and two days after his Rome speech, and it was evi dently delayed on purpose to keep him from answering it at Rome. Spencer haa been answer ed all right enough, however. — Dalton Argus. GOO Says Editor Shaver: 'l'he little ring peanners .are saying that Candler declared in his Dalton speech that he was against the railroad commission What little falsifiers they are! Col. Candler deslared in favor of the railroad commission, for the existence ,of which he is chiefly responsible, declared for its election by the people, and declared for stopping the extravagance of paying SIOO a day salaries out of 5-cent cotton taxes. Os course, that makes the ring pe xnners howl—the idea of cutting down any ring man’s exorbitant salary. To reduce the people,s tax burden always makes a ring papsucker howl.” Berner says the report that he and Atkinson met in the Macon Telegraph to hold a conference is false. Bob may talk that to the horse-mariners. Will he ex plain why the Telegraph did not mentic n the fact that the Jtwo anti Candler candidates for gover nor had me' —at night-in its sane turn? Win. Yates tried his best to help Spencer out in his appoint ment of a successor to Allen Candler, and stretched from Mclntosh to Chattooga. But the trouble is, there is hardly a safe Atkinson county between the two. But don’t blame Wm. Yates for that—he did the best he could for Spencer.—Dalton Ar gus. » Clolouel Candler’s letter, on the subject of a joint debate be tween the three teandidates for the gubernatorial nomination, published in Sunday’s Morning Nev. s, i- practically unanswer able. Ever since the campaign for the nominatio i began Judge Atkinson and Mr. Berner have been trying to get Col. Candler to meet them them in a joint discussion, and Col. Candler has refused to do so. His letter con tains excellent reasons for his refusal.—Savannah News. £.. MG READY ' Every expectant mother ha* a trying ordeal to face.
