FITX.IEE Says That Spanish Officials Destroyed The Maine. EXHONORfITES BLANCO Confederate and Union Vet erans Serenade Gen Lee This mornings Constituti m publishes this special report from Joe Ohl, the Constitution’s bril liant and reliable Washington cor respondent: Washington, April 12—( Special) Consul General Lee told the Sen ate committee on foreign affai.s this afternoon in a very few words that the Maine was blown up by Spanish officials. Since General Lee’s home coming was ordered it has been openly asserted that he would throw 7 valuable light upon the destruction of the Maine. The American people know that Gen eral Lee is deiibrate in everything he say*, and it has been with the greatest impatience that the pub lic has awaited his arrival. General Lee had not been in Washington long when he was Uehered into the committee room, lie was given a hearty, genuine reception by the members and answered many questions. He talked freely with the comm’ttee in regard to the conditions in Cuba, and especially with reference to the destruction of the Marne. He was v ry pointed in his state ment that the destruction of the vessel was due to Spanish agen cies. “Do you mean the Spanish officials in Cuba?” he was asked by a member of the committee. “1 mean the Spanish officials,” he replied, “but not General Blanco. I think some of the officials were cognizant of the plans to destroy the Vessel, but I <to not believe that the captain genera) was.” OPTO BIVJOYSJ Both tho method and results when Syrup of Figs is taken; it is pleasant and refreshing to the taste, and acta gently yet promptly on the Kidneys, Liver and Bowels, cleanses the sys tem effectually, dispels colds, head aches and fevers and cures habitual constipation. General Lee said he had’ no knowledge of the reports that a mine had been discovered by a diver under the Montgomery, while that vessel lay in the harbor of Havana. The reception tendered General Ley upon his arrival today, aud whenever he appeared in public, was vastly more enthusiastic than the president could get in any city in America. Topight ha was serenaded by the Confederate veterans and the UuiuD Veterans’Legiop, and there was such a turnout of people as even Washington seldom sees.
