London May 18—The Second
Spanish fleet has left Cadez to

Philippines.
New York May, 11.—During
the bombarding of Havana, the
roof of the palace of Governor
General Machias was torn off.
He showed great courage during
the shelling of the city in
trying to quiet the Spaniards.

there that reinforcements for
the Philippines will start on
Monday or Tuesday uext.

In three more weeks, the bright
faced boys and g rls who have been
attending the Rome Public
schools, will put aside their books,
and the long looked for summer
vacation will be at hand.
The closing exercises of the
school, will commence next Wed
nesday evening at 8 15 m Nevin’s
opera house, with that pretty
little play, “CinderilD, or who
lost the slipper.”
A large number of (he little
folks will take part. The teachers
have spared no time or expense in
making the entertainment a suc
cess, and it goes without saying,
it will be one of the prettiest little
plays ever presented by a Rome
school.
The graduating exercises of the I
high school will take plac , Tues
day May 31.
The school under the admin’w
tration of Prof. Hanis and
hii corps of teachers has been
most prosperous.
The cokred school will close on
June the 22nd

Returned From Coal Creek
Sheriff J. P. McConnell return
ed today from Coal Creek, where
he took several prisoners to the
Dade coal mines.

the North Rome Methodist
church last night to a large con
gregation. Great interest is be
ing manifested in the series of
meetings.

last night to Tampa. The Union

iness. Manager Cole sold 125
gallons of coffee at 10 cts a cup.
The band played “Dixie” when
they pulled out with a cheer
from the large crowd.
Trolley Party.—This even
ing a large party of young peo
ple will leave the city at 5 :3()
on a special car to New Rome to
see the furnace make a blast.
The party will be given by Mrs.
W. B. Chidsey in honor of her
