GLftDONS DEAD!
The Grand Old Man Passed

MURMEREDW FATHER’

Hawarden, May 19.—Gladstone
died at 5 o’clock this morning.
The temporary improvement last
night tn his condition did no*
continue. At 4 o’clock yesteiday
evening his physicians eaid they
expected the end at any minute;
Mr. Gladstone’s temporary’ rally
lasted until about 4 o’clock this
morning. The relapse at that
time was quite acute, ’
During the crisis Mr. Gladstone's
breathing was thirty-six to the
minute, and the ni' inbus of the
family were summoned. R> v.
Stephen Gladstone read pray‘r
and hymns, including Mr. Glad
stone’s favorite, “Rock of Ages.”
vVheii this was c included Mr.
Gladstone was heard to murmer
“Our Father.” He did not speak
agaL. or show consciousness.
All night long a we..ry vigil
was maintained. The whole family
was in and out ot the sick room.
Mrs, Gladstone remained
throughout the night at the bed
side of her dying husband. She
could not be induced to leave him
even to take refreshments.
The end came peacefully and
his life went quietly out.
Mr. Gladstone had been uncon
scious practically ail day, though
at times he seemed to recognize
for a moment some of the watch
ers about him. Certainly he did
recogn ze his wife, who was biside
him all day. except when the phy
sician prevailed upon her to rest.
She tenderly clasped her husband ’s
hand as she watched him. Appa
rently he slept a good deal, occa*
sionaliy he uttered a few words in
an incoherent, dreamy wav, words
which those who were watching
were unable to catch. The only
conso'atiou w.ts that he was not
suffering pain. No narcotics were
administered,
Though a national funeral will
probably be accepted by the fami
ly, there is little doubt that the
remains of Mr. Gladstone will be
laid to rest in the peaceful grav. -
yard ot Hawarden adjoining the
church where he Was married
more than halt a century ago.
