It has the combined circulation of the old evening Hustler of Rome and the Rome Daily Commercial, and is THE OFFICIAL GAZETTE OF The City of Rome The City Marshal The Sheriff of Floyd County ' The Ordinary of Floyd Co, The II ustler-Com m ercial has the confidence of the classes and the masses—because it mer its and deserves the confidence of all its readers. Now is the time to tell your neighbor to quit borrowing and enlist his name as a subscriber. England continues to prove her friendship. Its less than three weeks until the democratic primaries are pulled off. Is “Citizen” a democrat? If not what has he got to do with this scrap? ' The “Artful Dougers” will catch the dickens before June Gth has passed. Baseball, war and politics—of these three the campaign liar is not the humblest. Wonder what political favor Judge Harris has heretofore shown to “Citizen.” The people will “bring the slanders to judgment” ou June Gth. Mark that prediction. Though every cable is cut, General Blancc’s victories will still be announced in Madrid. Whenever the Hon. Seaborn Wright has opposed democracy The Hustler of Rome has had the manhood and the courage to fight him. The Hustler-Commer cial is under the same manage ment. | Without the ringsters can “quote a paragraph in law which authorized and provided for the appropriation of the $4,651.35 belonging to the peo ple, to their use the appropria tion was unlawful and conse quently wrong. It requires a law to pay out public monies ami not a law to prohibit its pay ment.—Rome Tribune. Accept your construction as correct, and we know as well as you do that in the practical, ev ery-day affairs of a county’s business affairs that such a rule would not work—still accepting your proposition as true, will you please quote to the p eople that passage of law which au thorizes the Tribune to receive SSO from the public funds for a trade edition ? If the late gubernatorial nom inee of the populist party his returned to the Democratic fold, then we have not one word to say against his taking a hand in the selection of standard bearers for Democracy. But, so long as he is a recognized leadei in the enemy’s camp, ail true Democrats will fight shy of his councils and look with suspicion upon the men whom he would “help” Democrats name as leaders. Would Americans se lect their generals on the sug gestion of Spaniards? Let Dem ocrats, and oi)ly Democrats be on guard. If Floyd county has paid her court house officers money they were not entitled to why don’t the “reform” organ bring suit to make them disgorge? If there was anything in this charge why has not the present county board, a member of which is op posing a “ring” candidate, brought suit to make them dis gorge? Will you undertake to answer? If to tell the Democrats of the Seventh district that the Hon. Watt Harris, Bartow’s latest candidate for congress, and a Democrat, has been holding caucuses with the Hon. Scab Wright, late gubernatorial nominee of the populist party, is treason —then make the most of it. Consular reports show that al least 1,250 Americans are now in dire distress in Cub?,, if they have not starved to death and . gone where all good American go. If any of them are alive their unspeakable misery admonishes us to carry-the war into Cuba as soon as possible.—St. Louis Re I public . The army which is to invade Cuba will be supplied with j drinking water to be taken from ) Brandywine Creek and conveyed south in tank steamers. Our sol dier boys will thus be doubly 1 indebted to the little state of > Delaware—first for filling their powder horns, and next their canteens. —Philadelphia Record f - j Italy is congratulating itself that there were only 920 duels fought last year in the whole country. Os these 103 had se rious consequences, though only one duelist was killed outright. , It is natural to infer that acci ( dent companies are luring down no dago-duelist risks. Here is something we may begin to ponder over even before the war is ended. How long .will it take the McCook syndicate, with Hanna. Elking, Fairbairns and Pierpont Morganjto get their financial claws on Cuba .—Macon News. ————— - The man who can extract olive oil from cotton seed can be relied I upon to flavor Spanish hot tamai fiee with wooden Dewey remains Queen of May o v r in M ini'a. . Many fortunes < f war will coni through the prize courts. It now appears that Dewey is not only a democrat but an Irish man. The Philippine# area long wave from home —for Uucle Sam’s boy ’h . The Brunswick Timesis easi ly one of the brightest dailies in '.he state. Dewey’s gun- awoke the natives and attract) d the gaze of the civil ized world Wiih the war about, a month old Uncle Sum has not yet carried re lief to the starving Cubans. If Sampson is a man of mark, his gunners are certainly men of high aim —Brunswick Times. There are, it is claimed 125,0€0 hostile troops in the Philippines. Uncle Sam should not send less than 10,000 Americans to Manila. Thou andsof Cubans continue to starve while Uncle Sam’s ar my of invasion sleeps in its tents and her r< lief vessels ride at anchor. Senator Sewell has declined the major generalship tendered him by President McKinley, rather than resign his seat in the senate. There is no lack of religious literature in the’army at Tampa, as Evangelist Moody has sent 25,000 Bibles and hymn books to the troops. Again we ask, what right has the lion. Seaborn Wright, or any other citizen who is not a democrat, to help name a leader for the democrat’s party? Judge Harris, hav’nt you now about come to the conclusion tiiat what we told you, viz: that the Tribune was only your friend when it could use you, is true? It lias been discovered that while he was in Cuba Weyler bought mules in his own name for S3O and sold them to Spain for $l2B.- Now the mules are be ing butchered and Weyler is kicking for them. Besides its volunteers, Mis- 1 souri has furnished a Contingent ■ of 10,000 fully developed mules equipped for either hauling or ’ kicking, as occasion my require. ; —Americus recorder. My Dear Judge : What do you think of •your reason for fighting J the Hustler-Commercial for city i printer, “because it was always i bull-doggish in its bitterness and I unrelenting in its personal ani mosities and bickerings.” You ' told us that you preferred the f I other paper because it was con i'; trolled by a different policy. Now, Judge, come across, whats your revised opinion ? f If a politician is to be known • by the political company he ■'l keeps, and Candidate Watt Har . I ris of Bartow calls on Hou. Sea- ■ horn \\ right of Floyd, the one , a democrat and the other every . tiling else, and they consult by the hour on the street and con sult in Hon. Seaborn Wright’s law office, —and the campaign among the democrats is on—and is hot—Then what is a loyal i democrat to think of Hon. Watt Harris’ democracy? Let demo-' i erats remember that John W. Maddox is 'it his post in Wash ington, that.’-he is not there now nor has he ever been there with the consent of Hon. Seaborn 1 Wright—and that now Col. Watt i Harris is in Floyd making' war. • uL AIG READY ■ Every expectant mother ha» a. trying ordeal to face. 11 she dues not ■Jte m\i p et ready f ° r u ? 1\ / ’j there is no .telling ' \ 1- what may happen. Name an item if you can —and while you are crying “re form” and calling on candidates to “disgorge,” will you tell us who was the officer who got that “other third”—and tell us too-, if it’s right for candidates to “disgorge,” is it not right for witnesses, bailiffs, and consta bles, also the unknown “third party”—who got’the “other third” —to disgorge? .“They say” Col. Candler used bad language in his Clinton speech. Os course the charge is ridiculously absurd. But enough abuse lias been heaped upon his devoted head to license his using a good deal of very strong lan guage in private, observes Mrs. My rick. • At a Macedonian wedding it is customary for tne bridegroom to lead home the bride by a halter. .As sir- enters the house he knocks her head against the wall as a sign to her that she must behave her silf properly or it will be the worse for her. According to the argument of the “reformer” a county officer may “grab” all he needs and escape to enjoy his “grab”—by sayjng “fellow citizens, I am not a candidate.” When the lovers of fuir play have been aroused then will th' Bartow candidate hustle for cover.
