The Hustler-Commercial is the only afternoon paper in Northwest Georgia. It has the combined circulation of the old evening Hustler of Rome and the Rome Daily Commercial and is THE OFFICIAL GAZETTE OF The City of Rome The City Marshal The Sheriff of Floyd County The Ordinary of Floyd Co, The Hustler-Commercial lias the confidence of the classes and the masses—because it mer its and deserves the confidence of all its readers. Now is the time to tell your neighbor to quit borrowing and enlist his name as a subscriber. The cry of “persecution” will Aye, verily, the laborer is wor thy his hire. T is average cab'e news is to be taken with a grain cf salt. The motto seems to be, “Pile on the expenses, Spain will have to foot the tills.” The rainy season in Cuba prom ises to be ushered in with showers oi American lead. jj The southern baseball league has disbanded. Perhaps the umpires had to join the army . It is all explained now. Dewey had a rabbit foot. Augusta Hei al li And Spemer and Bob have no'. The “ringsters” ask for hairpie justice, and that will be accorded th-in by th- rnaesss'on June 6th. Mark that prediction. Vivid correspondents describing battles that havn’t occurred is another ease where as far as it goes the pen is mightier than the s wo id. The “greaser” organs have re* doubled theix fire on Col. Candler. Poor Sunday-buii fighters—they •will stiff*. keenly though they wilfully deserve it all. The history of our great edu cators has always been one of pride with the American nation ! but Georgians in particular have al! reason to be proud of the work of one who has given his life to an earnest endeavor to upbuild his state and advance the interests of the young people of his country. In a recent conversation in a western state, for removed from home and its local influences, a man’of marked intelligence and character was heard to rem rk : “I want my child to go to Rome and see the Shorter Col lege girls, and I want her to meet that grand old man, Dr. A. J. Battle, the man who gave me my highest conception of life.” Os such men as Dr. Battle we have too few—men whose strong individuality and rugged moral ity combined with the humility belonging to such servants of the Master as he, too much cannot be said. They may complete this human life, but their life-work will live forever and spread to] the uttermost parts of the earth. May the peace that passeth all understanding be with them. Admitting, for rhe sake of the argument, that the “reforunerß”are in earnest ub ut the “Nigger in the Wood Pile” registrition list ideas, we would like to call the re formers attention to the fact th t if the “manipulation” of a regis tration list is worth anything to any one, it must he to the cand - dates in the general election, and not in the primary. This being true, and the present primary demonstrates that the registration list cuts no ice in a primary, what is the refermfr driving at? The tax collector will be a democrat, and the registration will be in his hands. This being true why should any democratic nominee, or any democrat ra sea kick. The“nigger in the wood p In” idea is a joke in spired by a non de plume writers vaporings. Many men have concluded to vote for Candler simply on account of the vicious attacks that have beeu made upon him by the Atkin son-Berner papers, observes Ed itor Eldridge. What Judge Harr's did to their “disserting commissioner” was a plenty. The Judge has hauled off for breakfast, after which he will proceed to finish the engagement. Yes dear ‘ reformer” there is a hire law and i t s corner stone is the proposition that a laborer is worthy his hire. Let your county commissioner dissent if be will, the truth stands just the same. z Taxes? What is there a city o f Rome’s size and growth thathnsa lower tax rate than $1,12|? Name your city and its rates. Come down out of your glittering gener ality baloon and give tiie people something definite —if you cm. The Brunswick Times says :“The situation—Candler in the lead, the opposition in the soup ” That is a cai did opinion from the homi county of Atkinson, tiie unresigt - able, and it contains large chunks <jf solid truth —Americus Herald Comptroller General Wright has made no attack on any one, The controller has been unmercifully and unjustly criticised and has only taken the defensive. His rep'y however, is so full and com plete that the reform e r s honestly believe that they have not only been attacked but hav« been unhorsed. Will “Tax Payer” come from behind his no-de-plurne? The good citizens of Floyd county would like to know the name of the man who makes so cowardly) attack on the memory of one of God’s noblest men. Shame on , such a man and shame on such methods in campaigning. This effort of the reformer to i Hike it appear that John Van diver is too corrupt a man to] handle the Floyd county regis > r ation list, is amusing—espec-- inlly as it is not insinuated that Mr. Vandiver is too corrupt to handle the money’s that come into the tax collector’s office. So the reformers” are not really afraid for John Vandiver to handle the county’s money, but can’t trust him to look after registration lists. Now, the truth of the business is Mr. Vandiver Ciii be trusted anywhere that any other good man can—and be and his supporters always “register” their own names to the comm unical ions they fur nish tor the public prints. To the average citizen of Floyd county, the double col umn “war-headed” appeal of! the “reform” organ this morn ing was quite a contrast to the class of “argument” used at the outset of the present campaign. The real reformers are solid for the ring ticket —the reformers for office only and their partizan fol lowing are for the nominees of that oath b end.
