Capt- W. C. Smith, who, on
ye terday received an appoint
ment as captain and who w; s
commissioned to raise a volun
teer company opened his office
in the Armstrong today and at
noon had enrolled the names of
quite a number of gallant young
Romans.

Washington this morning from
Mr. Paul Black stated that Mr.
Black had accepted the First
Lieutenantship of the com
mand.
Mr. Black graduated from the
State University as a captain.
He is the oldest son of the la
mented John J. Black. He will
secure a lieve of absence from
his position in the Land office I
department in Washington and
will join the colors in Rome in a
few days.
Mr. Arthur M. Dunn, yard
clerk of the Southern and <>ne of
the best drilled men in Rome,
will be Capt. Smith’s Second
Lieutenant. This makes a splen
did set of commissioned officers
audit is but a question of a few
days when the necessary num
ber of volunteers will be enroll
ed.
