k BYRD’S EYE VIEW-
Since Tax Collector Sanford
lias stated that he has collected
$25,000 back taxes and since the
comptroller general states that
the state’s share of this fund has
not been remitted, etc., I want
to ask the efficient tax collector
to dispel any doubts that may
have grown iut of statements
that controvert each other to
such a serious extent, by sub
mitting a statement of the ac
counts.
*
And, while this subject is up,
I want to make a few broken
observations. My data is taken
from the state and if I am wrong
1 desire the “reform” people,
and especially Tax Assessor
Sanford to correct me.
* *
*
The tax returns of Floyd county
for 1896, foot up $7,584,014.
*
* *
The tax re'urns of Floyd county
for the year 1897 foot up $8,010,-
145.
**-*
The tax rate for the year 1896,
the last year of the old board, was
$1 00.
* *
*
The tax rate for the year of 1897,
the first year of the new board,
was $1 25
* *.
*
Now, with the return of 1896 at
$7,584,014 and the rate at $1 .00
fax Collector John D. Moore col
lected from Nov. 1, 1896 to Jan.
1. 1897, tor state and county
$66,232.49.
* *
*
These are figures quoted oy the
state and county records. All
right, now lets see what Tax Col
lector Sanford was able to do on
liis first } ear in office.
* *
. *
1 quote the records again: Mr.
Sanford, for the year of 1897, with
the returns nearly a half million
dollar- greater than in 1896, and 1
with the rate increased to one
f‘ urth more—a return of SB,OIO,-
145 and a rate of $1,25, fax Col
lector Sat.ford, for the year and
up to Jan. 4. 1898. collected
$62,696,15
*
» *
Os course Mr. Sanford has
collected some of the ’97 taxes
since Jan 4.
* *
*
And of course I do not charge
him with not being a good tax
collector—but I do state that
these figures show that Tax
Collector Sanford is not the only
pebble on the beach.
* *
, *
Mr. Sanford had the advan
tage of a larger tax return by a
half million dollars and a
bigger tax rate by twenty-live
per cent and yet 'fax Collector
John D. Moore collected over
$3,500 more money than Mr*
Sanford did.
***
As to the $25,000 back taxes
[which Mr. Sanford claims to
i have collected and which the
comptroller general claims not
to have received the state’s share
Mr. Sanford must still have it
for 1 do not see any su h item
on the records.
*
* *
Os course, if Mr. Sanford still
has it, it is alright, and that will
explain why the records do not
show this amount—but Mr. San
ford certainly has had time to
pay this amount in, and if lie
I has collected it, it strikes me
. that he is neglecting his duty in
not paying it in.

V-
This cry about a registration
list cutting any ice in the con
trol of county politics is pure
unadulterated rot. Floyd county
is democratic. No county has a
more intelligent body of voters
and a cry of election frauds is
tqo silly to be dignified by a
denial.
*
* *
The intelligent voters of Floyd
county have controlled all elec
tions in this county for a genet
ation. 1 f a majority of them have
seen fit to retain in office men
who have proved themselves
worthy, efficient and capable,
and if a lot of sore heads and
pie hunters and office seekers
band to :other as “reformers”
and cry “ring I” “ring!” why
v. h it difference does it make?
* *
*
None, absolutely none, unless
it is to put the people on guard
and warn them to *Stand the
closer together to repel the ra
pacious, crew. And that they
will ever do.
* *
*
Now one word about the en
dorsement of the “reform” tick
et by tha‘ undemocratic club the
Young Men’s Democratic Club .
*
* *
1 infer, from the news columns
of the “reform” organ, that on
last Monday night this oath
bound secret political organiza
tion held one of its star chamber
me« tings and endorsed the re
form ticket.
* *
*
1 am, and have always been, a
democrat, but not having to be
oath bound and not having been
black-balled 1 had not heard of
this last meeting and this re
endorsement of the “reformers.”
* *
. *
I charged some weeks ago
that this secret political organi
z.lion had held a “stormy meet
ing” and had endorsed the re
formers by a vote of 19 to 12.
* *
*
That charge has been admit
ted as trim, by a number of the
members of this secret political
organization and a former high
official stated to me that some
of the “labor element” got in
control and precipitated the
fight that night. That he believ
ed a mistake had been made. lie
said that he hoped to get the
conservative element out some
night and reconsider said action.
* *
*
1 notice that the “reform”
organ gets tins report of a re
endorsement of the “reform”
ticket by this secret political or
ganization and publishes it
under sensational headlines.
*
* *
I also notice that, after the “re
form” organ had for a ad
vartised for a meeting of the fence
chib, that said chih met in the
c mrt house last Saturday. That a
cut a,.d dibd program was
sprung—that it was over
whelmingly tabled, and the “re
formers” were not endorsed —md
(hat the reform organ has failed
to pu dish a report of that meet
ing—though it was “open” and
happened some throe davs pre
vious to th) “re-indorsement”
meeting of th » star chamber ass air
cf the oath bound secret political
organization—well, well, well!
* *
*
And why is it that the “refo-in”
organ has t o “boat”
its candidate for governor, Rail
road Comm.snoner Spencer Atkin
son? Is Spencer to be knifed at
the last moment and sacrificed on
the altar of personal local parti
sanship? It looks 8". Poor
Spencer! But he is not in it —
nor is anything else which stands
m th'* path of the “reformer”—if
it can be “removed.”
* *
*
'/he people will rally at the
polls on June 6th and crush the
unholy “reform” crew. Mark
that prediction.
