E RIIA L JMCNROK .... Bryan Advocates it in Speech at Gmah?. NO WAR OF CONQUEST ; Should be Waged, but we Fight I For Humanity. Omaha, Neb., June 15 —The Nebraska building at the expo sition was dedicated today with appropriate ceremony amid the plaudits of thousands of the state’s citizens. Gov. Holcomb and his staff took part in the ex ercises, along with many of the slate’s most distinguished resi dents. The speakers of the day were Hon. Constantine J. Smith,Hon. William F. Gurley and Hon. William J. Bryan. Mr. Bryan’s oration was nota ble for one thing—his first pub lic declaration on the war issue. He took high ground on the question, urging that the war is for humanity, and not the ex tending of the United States ter ritory. In concluding he said the maniLst destiny of the na tion is m t to acquire new realms to govern, but to carry out the fundamental principles of Dem ocracy to the end that equality among the citizens may be se cured. Mr. Bryan said, in part: “War is harsh ; it is attended by hardships and suffering, it means a vast expenditure of ' money and men. We may aIL pray for the coming of the time! promised in Holy Writ when the spears shall be beaten Into pruning hooks, and the swords into plowshares; but universal peace cannot come until justice |is enthroned throughout the world. Jehovah deals with na- 1 tions as he deals with men, and) for both decrees that the wages of sin is death. Until the right has triumphed in every land and love reigns in every heart, government must, as a last re sort, appeal to force. As long as the oppressor is deaf to the voice of reason, so long must the citi zen accustom his shoulder to the musket and his hand to the sa ber. “Our nation exhausted di plomacy in its efforts to securea peacable solution of the Cuban question and took up arms when it was compelled to choose be tween war and servile submis sion in cruelty, which would have been a disgraceful submis sion to barbarism. “History will vindicate the position taken by the United States m the war with Spain. In saying this I assume that the principles which were invoked in the inauguration of the war will be observed in its prosecu tion and conclusion. If a contest undertaken for the sake of hu manity degenerates into a war of conquest, we shall find it diffi cult to meet the charge of hav ing added hypocrisy to greed. Is our national character so weak that we cannot withstand the temptation to appropriate the first piece of land that comes , within our reach? “To indict upon the enemy all possible harm ie the warfare, ' but shall we contemplate a ROME GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY EVENING, JUNE 15. 1898.
