Porto is a contraction of Opor

noble, rich, illustrious, opulent.
All code books carried on war

The letters in a code book are
printed in an ink that fades

Modern invention has in many
instances substituted very infe

The Vesuvius acts like light
ning in some ways. It didn’t
strike twice in the same spot;
chiefly for the reason that the
spot wasn’t there.
“Dis mug, Camara,” said the
Barroom Strategist, “isgoin’ ter
sink his fleet in de Suez Canal
ter keep Dewey frum gitfin’ ter
Spain. Dat's w’at.”
Since it’s shown the Vesuvius
can blow holes in the ground
big enough to put churches in,
knocking spots out of Cuba is
only a question of time.
Chicago is thus early bidding
for the next national political
conventions. Though these
events are two years off, it is
violating no confidence to c onvey
the information to Chicago that
St. Louis has first claim on both
conventions.

If a newspaper doesn't toll the
truth it is censured, yet if one
shou'd state all the facts that
come-into its possession about
men and women, society would
be set by the ears and the editor
clubbed. isn’t it.—Mont-,

A.u esteemed Kant-as City con
temporary is conducting a vot
ing con test among its Missouri
and K iiisns constituents on the
iiioment.n.s question: “Wirt
shall weV do with the Phili| -

that up to date the vote stands
687 for permanently holding the
archipelago to 35 for turning
them loose.
There is a good deal of curiosi
ty to know whether John Teni
pie Graves will take the line fa
voring the teaching of the fath

or will he not approve an evan

been dubbed imperialism?
Whichever side he takes will be
ably espoused and eloquent!)
advocated.
The senate can hold up the
Hawaiian annexation resolution
as long as it pleases without
tear of arousing public condom
nation. The people of the conn
try would like to have an oppor
tunity to study and vote upon
that proposition, and if the sen
ate blocks the legislation unti
the next congress meets the
country can decide the questioi
in an unmistakable way.
In the West Indies, when an
American warship needs coal, it
is towed up to a pier called tl e
coal wharf. A stout gang plank
is shoved frem the string p ; ece
o the lowest deck, and the bunk
ers are filled, not by derricks,
but by native women, who, to
the number cf about 200, throng
the wharves eager to get a “coal
job.” The coal is carried on
oard in baskets, each contain
ing an even 100 pounds.
The Missouri supreme court is
performing a service of real and
permant value by establishing
the custom of designating other
days in the week than Friday
for the execution of condemnjed
criminals in this state. Friday
has for too long a time been
known as “hangman’s day,”
and has strengthened the popu
lar superstitions that cluste
around the sixth day of the
week.
Nothing is being said about
dollar wheat or any other wheat
in the current republican plat
forms Those of the Kansas and
Illinois republican conventions
are silent on the -subject. The
reason it that wheat for Septem
ber delivery is below 70 cents,
which is not what the dollar
utterances of a year ago had in
view. But it is difficult to see
why, if the republican adminis
tration was to be credited with
dollar wheat then, it is not now
properly to be credited with 70
cent wheat. —Springfield Repub

The fathers of the Republic
possibly foresaw that our domin
ion would be extended to the
West Indies, and it is not im
probable those who formulated
the -Monro? ooctrine did not
consider our sovereignty over
t’ne,West Indies incompatible
with the principles they enun
ciated; but not even Thomas
Benton contemplated the specta
cle of the Stars and Stripes fly
ing over the Philippines when,
in u glorious burst of eloquence,
he waved his hand Westward
and exclaimed: “There is the
East—there lies India!” We are
living in a swift age.

Sei vic on board the monitors
is by no means comfortable so
far as temperature i, concerned,
even in cool climates ; and it is
almost unbearable down in the

The Tartars or Kurds have a
curious methods of extending
assistance to each other when in
difficulty. If a man loses his cat
tle or other worldly guods he
pours a little brown sugar into a
piece of colored cloth, ties it up
and carries one such parcel to
each of his friends and acquain
tances. The recipients thereupon
present the unfortunate one with
jows, sheep and sums of money,
?ach according to his means, and
in that way set him upon his
