WITH WHITE OFFICERS
Who Were Elected by The
Negro T ro ops.
Montgomery, July s.—The
Second call of the president for
troops only apportioned two
brigradea to Alabama. One ne
gro battalion had already been
accepted under the first call, and
the governor desiring to make
up a regiment of negroes, con
fined his proclamation for the
second call to colored men, and
asked for eight companies, or
two battalions. Sixteen compa
nies have been tendered the ad
jutant general, but he could ac
cept only eight in the order in
which the tenders were male
from the different parts of the
state, as follows :
Two from Montgomery, two
from Mobile, one from Birming
ham, one from Auburn, one
from Troy and one from Shef
field.
xhese companies are to have
white officers, elected and ten
dered by the men themselves.
One of the Montgomery '•ompa
nies has been Organized with Dr.
J. J. Hunter, captain; Taylor
Scott, first lieutenant; J. A.
Dillard, second lieutenant. Gas
ton Gunter, Esq., is to be the
captain of the other company,
while the lieutenants are yet to
. be chosen.
Major Bullard of the battalion
now at Mobile, it is understood
s to be the colonel of the colored
regiment thus being organized.
He is a West Pointer and comes
from the regular army, and there
can only be one such officer in
.i ich volunteer regiment. Major
Bran lon. of Tuscaloosa, and
Kyle, of Decatur, who were
urned down under the action of
;he war department in allowing
only two majors to a regiment,
are to be majors of this regiment.
The regiment is already prac
tically raised, and it is thought
it will be in Cuba before the
month passes away.
