SAILED FROM TAMPA
On Last Sunday Morning. Will
Not Arrive in Time.
Washington, July 5. I pward
of 4,000 men are now on their
way to reinforce Gen. Shafter in
his operations m Santiago pro
vince. A most important contin
gent is six batteries of light ar
tillery, consisting of twenty four
officers and 628 men, which left
Tampa Sunday. They are made
up of two companies each from
the 3d, 4th and sth Art. On Juue
20 the Ist Illinois, of forty six
officers and 896 men pulled out
of Tampa, and Sunday at 12
o’clock the Ist District of Colum
bia Vols., consisting of thirty
six officers and 817 men, in com
mand of Col. George 11. Harris
left the same place. On June 28
a vessel left with 950 men aboard
comprising recruits to fill a num
ber of the existing regiments
now in Cuba to their maximum
strength provided by law. The
vessels are to assemble at Key
West, where a naval convoy wil
escort them to Shafter's relief.'
WAR BOARD MEE IS.
More Troops Will Soon Leave
For Cuba or Porto Rico.
Washington, July 5. —The
war board was in session with
President McKinley for consid
erably over an hour today. Sec
retary of War Alger. Secretary
ot the Navy Long, Gen. Miles,
commanding the army; Admiral
Sicard and Capts. Malian and
Crowinshield were prosent
The telegrams received over
night and today were laid before
theLoard and there was a gener
al conference on the situation.
The most important action
taken was a decision to expedite
the departure of the fleet under
Commodore Watson to the Span
ish coast. The administration is
desirous of beginning the bom
bardment of the important coast
of Spain as soon as'possible and
the events of the past twenty
four hours make the project all
the more feasible.
With all opposition to Samp
son’s fleet removed, Watson will
sail at the earliest moment and
this announcement was made by
Secretary Long with great sat
isfaction.
The matter of reinforcements
for the American position at
Santiago was taken up by the
board which concluded that be
fore reinforcements could reach
Shafter the necessity at tin
point would be passed.
Troops, however, will be sent
but they are not in the naturi
of reinforcements. The troops,
it is stated, will be dispatched
as early as possible but whethei
they will go direct to Cuba oi
Porto Rico, the next poii tof
attack, is yet a matter ui som<
doubt.
