King David is said to be the

There’s absolutely no call for
Germany to take our partin the

Schley seems to have oeen the
right man at the right point of
the compass.
Cervera’s men distinguished
themselves as much by their
bravery as by their bad gunnery.
"A hot time in the old town”

Effort is to be made by the
American Tract Society to put a
Spanish primerand New Testa
ment into the hands of every
Cuban family as soon as the
war is over. Already the society
has more than 400 publications
in the Spanish language,‘and its
labors in Mexico, especially,have
been and protracted.
Spain pretends not to be very
much alarmed in reference to the
proposed sending of a "Hying
squadron to her shores. But she
will change her tune when the
lowa and the Oregon line up ofi
Cadiz. A few of their "13 inch
pills” landed in her forts would
wake up the echoes all the way
to Madrid.
All Americans will be pleased
to know that Cevera was not
killed in battle. He is too good
a man to be a Spaniard and our
country should not exchange
him as the Spaniards would
probably assassinate him be
cause he could not perform an
impossible act —Americus Her
ald.
McKinley is welcome to all
he can make for the Republican
party by the appointment of
such Democrats as Joe J. Ham- |
ilton, to office. While other
towns have been drawing negro
postmasters, Rutne is awarded a
white man and a Democrat.
Tiianks, Mr. President, thanks.
Somewhere in the state’s con

Hogan whom th u y are offering
for governor. Now if they can
bring forward a Mr. Hominy on
the tick, they will have a favor

Lieutenant Hobson gave an
order to a press clipping bureau
last November for clippings of
ill newspaper mention of him,
and from that time until he sail
ed with Sampson’s fleet only 40
such clippings were collected.
Now they are being gathered at
the rate of about 400 a day.
If the Spaniards will only
miss our boys at the front as we

Miles will reach the front
when Camara reaches Manile,

day after the war is over.

SPANISH HUMOR.
Spanish humor excelled itself
at Bilbao recently. There had been
a bu'l fight, and the matadores
hud diep"sed of their bulla in the
most glory fashion to the number
of some halfdozen, and the audi
ence was in that mood of high ex
hilaiatii n which is peculiarly to
the inception of brilliant ideas.
The idea came. An individual the
happy of turning iq-to th®
arena, which was drenched with
the blood of bulls and horse®, a
live, pig, with aD American flag
tied to its (ail.
Th« flag was seton fire, and midst
hoarse yells Iro n thousands of
throats, the pig rushed about the
ring until it was literally roasted
to death’ The local chronicler ot
this piece of disgusting bruta'ity,
oiicluded his description as fol
low •
"Would to Gwd that the flag ot
the Yankee N > ion might be as
quickly reduced to nothing.”—
London Leader.
It is gratifying to note that
ample provision has been made
fur the payment of the Philip
pine army upon the arrival of
Gen. Merritt. It is said that
several million dollars in gold
. are on board the Newport, and
also a SIOO,OOO emergency fund.
This will enable him to accom
plish wonders when once in pos
session of Manila. Upon the e\e
of his departure the general,
when asked if he intended tak
’ ing peaceful possession of the
' Philippines, replied: ‘'Peaceful
■ or otherwise, just as it corues;
but I will take it, no matter
what obstacles I may find in my
_ i path of duty.”
