Children Perished.
Boston, July 9—Th« Plant line
steamer Halifax has arrived here,
having on board 162 auivivore o‘
the French line steamer La Bom
gogne, which was auuk in a collis
i »n with the ship Cromar'yshin
off Sable island last Monday On
the passage from Halifax, La Bour
gogne’s passenger list was carefully
revised, at d it was shown that
there were 814 souls on board the
steamer, of whom 550 were lost
and 164 saved. Os these saved
twelve were second-class, forty*
seven steerage and the remaining
105 were members of the crew
On arriving here the shipwreck
ed men were put on board a tram
bound for New York.
The correspondent of the Asso
ciated Press took passage on tl e
Halifax during the trip to Boston
and had an opportunity to come
in contact with very many of those
who escaped, Their stories of ex*
perience were thrilling; many of
them gave horrifying stories ol
brutality, if not murder, possibly
never equaled in the history of
the merchant marine. Some of
them showed the marks and
bruises received during the terrib e
struggle for life.
Among those on beard the Hal
ifax not one could be found who
was on deck at the time the col
lision occurred.
The survivors agree that when
th° La Bourgogne was struck by
the Cromartyshire, the shock was
not great.
Therefore, it is be’ieved that
many of the passengers never
awoke. The statements as to the
time intervening between the col
lision and the sinking of the La
Bourgogne very greatly. Some sav
ten or After n minutes, and others
say thirty or thirty-five minutes
while one man was certain it wa,
a full hour. The blow struck La i
-
Bourgogne was one that could
never be provided against by watei
tight doors.
Among the remarkable escapes
wvre those of three stokers. They
wore in the stoke holp when the
accident occurred. Their stoiy is
as follows;
About five minutes ’after the
crash the water began to come in
to the boiler room and it soon
rushed in great volumes. The
pumpst were tried, but to no avail
The waer put the out and
the engines stopped. The ch’et en
gineer gave orders to close th
water tight doors, but even when
they were closed the w’atercame in
almost as fas' as before.
Then all hope was abandoned
and the engineer blew twice on the
whistle the signal.for all to escape
who could do so. There was a rush
but about fifteen men were drown
ed in the stoke holes and engii e
room. Three men who succeeded
in getting out founa that all the
boats had left and they at once
plungeg into the sea. They were
picked up later and taken on board
tne Cromartyshire.
A. Achsrd, a Frenchman *ho
has been some years in Baltimore,
was on his way to France with his
wife and two children. On the
morning of the collision he put
them in a boat amidship and went
to get another boat for himsell.
Only one end of the boat he got
into was cut loose and the boat
tipped when it descended, throw
ing the occupan'S into the water.
At this time the La Bourgogues’
funne's gave way and one of them
fell d irectly across the boat in '
which Achards’ wife and children

CLEVER MftNEUURE
Os Commodore Schley CaUhflt

IN CHASE OF 60 NILES.
Brookiey, Oregon and Gloces
. ter Were Star Fighters.
Off Santiago, July 8. —after a
chase of 60 miles to the West
ward the Brooklyn, closely fol
lowed by the Oregon, overhauled
the Cristabal Colon, after she hftd
rim ashore and hsd hauled dowu
tier Hag.
Capt. Cook, of the Brooklyn,
went on board of her, and the
CJinmander of the Spanish armor
ed cruiser came forward to surren
der and was taken on hoard the
New York, which c»dib up an
hour after the Blooklyn and Oi
egon had completed tho capture of
the Cristobal Colon . The latter
was not seriously damaged, though
she was struck several tunes by
shots from the Brooklyn and the
Oregon.
During the chase a clever ma
noeuvre by Commodore Schley in
h-tiding due West to Cape Caney,
while the Cri-lobal Colon had ta
ken a more Southerly direction,
with a much greater distance to
cover, rendered the Spaniard’s es
cape impossible. Tneie seems to
be no doubt that’the Cristobal Co
lon, and perhaps the other three
Sp’inirh armored cruisers would
have escaped had it not been for
the prompt action of Commodore
Schley.
The Brooklyn his fl ig«hjp, alo le.
was in a position to attack the
Spanish vessels as they left the
harbor, and the Commodore
s eam< d directly toward them and
engaged all four cruisers, inflicting
great damage upon them.
The Oregon was the first to join
the Brooklyn, and afterward the
lowa. Indiana, Texas and Vixen
closed around th « Spi lards, all
pouring in a deadly fire, but from
the beginning to the end ot the
fight t*ie Brooklyn, Oregon and
Gloucester took the most impor
tant part in the destruction of the
enemy.

Much Knife!
The use of the eurgeon’s knife ia be
coming to general, resulting fatally
in such a large number of cases, as to
occasion general alarm.
Mr. William Walpole, of Walsbtown,
South Dakota, writes; “About
three years ag o, there came under
ny left eye a little blotch about the
size of a small pea.
alt grew rapidly,and
shooting pains ran
in every direction.
I became alarmed
and consulted a
good doctor, vi ho
pronounced it can
cer, and said that it
must be cut out.
This I would not
consent to, having
little faith in the
indiscriminate use of theknife. Read
ing of the many cures made by S. S.
S., I determined to give that medicine
a trial, and after I had taken it a few
days, the cancer became irritated ahd
began to discharge. This after awhile
ceased, leaving a small scab, which
finally dropped off, and only a healthy
little scar remained to mark the place
where thedestroyer had held full sway.

toexpect an operation to cure it. S.S.S4.
